De invloed van de cisterciënzerabdij Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Ten Duinen uit Koksijde reikte in de middeleeuwen heel ver. Welk thema je ook uit de middeleeuwse geschiedenis licht, vroeg of laat kom je met de machtige abdijgemeenschap in aanraking. Er wordt aangenomen dat de abdij Ten Duinen en andere abdijen in hun actiegebied op de ontwikkeling van het landschap een bepalende invloed uitoefenden. Volstaat dit dan om te kunnen spreken over een monastiek landschap met typische kenmerken? Zijn monastieke landschappen mythe of realiteit? Voor de vroegere Abdij Ten Duinen beschikken we over een rist bronnen, van archeologische en historische aard. Die bronnen en vroegere onderzoeksresultaten willen we de komende jaren aan verder interdisciplinair onderzoek onderwerpen. Hierbij concentreert het Abdijmuseum zich op volgende thema’s:
– de rol en de invloed van de abdij Ten Duinen in Vlaanderen en Zeeland
– de domeinvorming van de abdij en de daaruit voortvloeiende relaties en conflicten
– het beheer en de exploitatie van het domein door de abdijgemeenschap van Ten Duinen.

De lezingen van het 5de internationaal colloquium reiken methodes en vergelijkingen aan voor het onderzoek naar de interactie tussen landschappen, religieuze instellingen en de daaruit voortkomende relaties en conflicten tussen de 12de en de 18de eeuw in noordwest Europa.
