To mark the 650th anniversary of Johannes Tauler’s death this meeting will take on the form of a conference to highlight Tauler, who has played a significant role as intermediary between various reading communities in the convents, city houses and beguinages he visited on his travels from his hometown Strasbourg to Basel and up the Rhine to Cologne and Brabant where he stayed with the Dutch mystical writer Jan van Ruusbroec. Through his preaching Tauler must have been a key figure in the dissemination of mystical theology among the religious women in the Dominican convents and the Gottesfreunde in the Rhineland and Brabant. Through a presentation of Tauler’s life and works it will be possible to demonstrate the general ideas of the programme Mobility of Ideas and Transmission of Texts to a broad audience. The proceedings of the colloquium will be published in Ons Geestelijk Erf, the journal of the Ruusbroec-genootschap, which will offer the PhD-students a chance to practice editing for academic publishing.
