The UCSB Medieval Studies program is soliciting abstracts for our Annual Medieval Studies Graduate Student Colloquium on April 28, 2012 in Santa Barbara, CA. This year’s theme is “Fear and Loathing in the Middle Ages” and our keynote speaker will be Teofilo F. Ruiz, Professor of History at UCLA. Our conference encourages interdisciplinary discourse around the ubiquitous, yet variegated, theme of the feared and the loathed in any aspect(s) of law, culture, and society in the Middle Ages. The colloquium is open to graduate students studying the Middle Ages (300-1500) in all disciplines, geographical regions, and stages of research. Possible topics include fear and loathing in: war and violence, legal and customary practices, devotional practices and texts, medical and scientific practices and texts, funerary practices, architecture and/or civic planning, the construction of the “other,” including humans and nature (e.g. the wilderness), and diplomatic relations.
We welcome 250- to 300-word abstracts for presentations 20 minutes in length.
