Gothic ivory sculpture, surviving in large numbers in collections around the world, has thus far not received all the attention it deserves. The Gothic Ivories Project, launched on the web in December 2010, seeks to promote research in the field by providing an online catalogue of surviving pieces carved in Western Europe from c. 1200 to the early 16th century. This conference will celebrate the recent wave of new scholarship in the field and reassess the importance of these minute carvings for the study of medieval art.
This conference is the second part of a two-day Gothic Ivories In Focus event co-organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Gothic Ivories Project and Research Forum at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. The first part will be held on Friday 23 March 2012 at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
