Training School – Digital Technologies, Databases and Repertories for Medieval Studies

SISMEL – Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino (International Society for the Study of Latin Middle Ages, Florence) is pleased to announce the Training School Digital Technologies, Databases and Repertories for Medieval Studies funded by the COST ACTION 1S1005 Medioevo Europeo. Medieval Studies and Technological Resources and run in collaboration with the Fondazione Ezio Franceschini (Florence).

I. The Training School is open to arts and humanities students and scholars registered at institutions in any of the thirty-six COST countries (these are essentially Europe and Israel, but see http://www.cost.esf.org/service/glossary/COST-Countries). It is principally aimed at those writing dissertations which relate to medieval literature, art and history. The course is free of charge. II. 10 bursaries of 800 Euro are available for travel and accomodation, courtesy of COST, to be assigned based on an even distribution of nationality and gender. Given the same level of qualifications, preference will be given to students attached to institutions which take part in the COST Action Medioevo Europeo (www.medioevoeuropeo.eu). III. Application deadline: July 15, 2012. Only web applications will be accepted.
 
IV. The course involves six days of intensive training, mostly on SISMEL databases (www.sismelfirenze.it) either published on the web through Mirabile (www.mirabileweb.it) or accessible only from the internal LAN of the Certosa del Galluzzo. Participants will receive a solid theoretical foundation and will develop handson experience in managing digital repertoires and new ways of elaborating questions on digitized databases. The course will provide a detailed look into the new advances of tools and techniques in the field of digital humanities, ranging from traditional DBMS (Data Base Management Systems) and web technologies to the new paradigm of the Semanitc
Web. 


The course involves morning practical sessions focused on particular aspects (i.e.: digital data structure and management, data formats, interoperability etc.) which include supervised hands-on sessions. In the afternoon lectures and seminars will be offered to participants allowing them to become familiar with other major European digitized medieval databases as well as new methodologies, including ontologies and semantic tools.
Two roundtables will permit to engage a dialogue between trainers and and trainees on theoretical principles and practical experiences on digitized repertoires on medieval authors and works, and on medieval bibliographies.
The Training School will be held in conjunction with the XVI International Training Course on bibliographic research. Medioevo latino – Bibliographic methodologies and technologies.
