For the period of October 1 2012 – September 30 2016.

In relation to project: Caput Iohannis in Disco or St John’s Head on a Platter: object, 

context, medium, roots. Towards an iconology of the head in the Middle Ages and the 

early Modernity between North and South

With the following project outline:
  1. The Johannesschüssel forms an ambiguous object/artifact and difficult to define. It emerges between 1250-1550
  2. The Johannesschüssel has a complex Sitz im Leben/ context in devotion, liturgy, drama and ‘low culture’ (popular and magical uses of the artifact).
  3. The Johannesschüssel shows a ‘medium-shift’ from sculpture to painting at the end of the Middle Ages
  4. The Johannesschüssel is related to a wider archetype and deeper situated roots of a fascination for the loose (male) head in European culture with important dynamics on the North-South axes.
The scholarship is destined for those with a university degree (M.A) in History of Art (Middle Ages – Early Modernity), preferable in addition a degree in Cultural Anthropology and/or Religion Studies,  chose areas and interests lay in interdisciplinary research into: relic and object cults, performativity and material culture, exegesis and image theory, iconology and Bildwissenschaften.

The candidate will reside periodically in Leuven, Belgium
