Eckhart and Ruusbroec
This lecture presents some outcome of the FWO research project devoted to the study on the influence of the German Dominican Meister Eckhart (ca. 1260-1328) on the Brabantine mystic Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381). Despite the recent discoveries of the diverse aspects of exchange between the mystical traditions in Rhineland and Brabant in the later Middle Ages, the relation between these two most prominent mystics of both the traditions has remained still unclear. Although many scholars have pointed to their similar theological ideas and common vocabularies, we have no evidence of a direct historical link between their lives. This study takes special notice of a few textual linkages in the heretical tenets which Ruusbroec cites from the mystical movements among the laities and accuses of their unorthodoxy. Remarkably some of those citations are literally as well as doctrinally related to Eckhart’s condemned propositions in the papal bull In agro dominico promulgated in 1329. This fact suggests Ruusbroec’s confrontation with the impact of the condemnation of Eckhart’s doctrines affecting his surroundings, regardless of how accurately he was acquainted with the Dominican and his teachings. Thus, situating Ruusbroec’s life and works within the aftermath of Eckhart’s event, this study aims to elucidate Ruusbroec’s proper doctrinal position with regard to the relevant mystical themes which appear in his criticism of heretical tenets as well as in the condemned doctrines of Eckhart; and to follow a process of critical inheritance of mystical theology from Eckhart to Ruusbroec.
