Conférence – Writing, painting, chiseling. Memorial strategies in the written legacy of Lupus of Ferrières

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Michael Allen
Department of Classics – University of Chicago
Thursday 20 March – 4 pm
Justus Lipsiuszaal LETT 08.16
Faculty of Arts, Blijde Inkomststraat 21, Leuven (B)
Famous for being a great Carolingian Humanist, Lupus of Ferrières wrote letters and poems that also reveal details from the inner life of his monastery. On the basis of a newly discovered collection of poems by Lupus, we are able to explain and clarify a largely hidden and until now misunderstood conflict that has vexed the appreciation of a key epitaph that survives written and corrected in Lupus’s own hand.
The solution and contextualization sets the meaning of remembrance and of the « management of memory » within Lupus’s preserved literary output into a fresh light.
The lecture presents the new sylloge of poems, suggests generally some of what Lupus wanted to be remembered and about whom, and resolves the mystery of a peculiar ominous presence in his letters.
