Seeing the author at work: challenges of editing an autograph Although autograph manuscripts of the Middle Ages are potentially an important source of information about an author at work and the genesis of his/her text, these aspects have not yet been sufficiently studied because of a lack of adequate editing techniques.
This round table wants to address the following questions: how must a medieval autograph precisely be defined, and what types of autograph can be distinguished? What can we learn from medieval autographs with respect to the circumstances in which they were produced, the way in which the author’s text or translation was created and what choices the author made (syntactically, lexically)? What specific edition methods are necessary to provide the modern reader/researcher with the necessary elements that can grasp these aspects? Can modern techniques help us in this?
