Appel à contribution – Markets and Agents in Premodern Europe

The agents of financial markets in Premodern Europe: social background, strategies and goals. May, 6 -7th 2015. Institució Milà i Fontanals (CSIC-Barcelona)

Considering the development already reached by financial markets in Europe throughout the period between 1300-1800, all agents implied in them (ranging from businessmen or bankers to brokers or lower-profile lenders) deserve close attention. This workshop aims to describe their role in these markets.

This way, it has three main purposes: to identify these agents and their particular background, to retrace their strategies (i.e., credit or financial instruments employed and networks they were involved with) and, finally, to examine the reasons for their activities (economic gains, social acknowledgement or political power). Besides, special attention will be paid to the way public and private spheres could be combined. In other words, studding their leading characters, it tries to penetrate into such a complex phenomenon as financial markets and the influence not only economic dynamics but also other kind of factors had on it.

As announced, the workshop that will be held at IMF-CSIC (Barcelona) on 6-7th May 2015 continues the one that took place at the University of Valladolid, 13-14th November 2014, where the principal objects of study were the economic markets as institutions (http://www.arcacomunis.uma.es/articulos/markets.pdf).

The seminar is preferably intended for young researchers keen on the mentioned topics in economic and social history. It welcomes case studies based on any European territory between 14th-18th c. or synthetic reflections on the above-suggested themes.

Please send your proposal, including a short abstract (max. 400 words), a paper title, as well as your name and institution, to estudismedievals@imf.csic.es before February, 27th. Successful applicants will be notified by 28th March. As soon as possible, the organizers will also inform the participants about possible ways to help them with costs.
