‘The Cult of Saints: a Christendom-wide study of its origins, spread and development’ is an ERC-funded project investigating the origins and development of the cult of Christian saints, gathering all the evidence that is available on the cult, from its origins until around AD 700, across all the languages of early Christianity that have left evidence from this period (Syriac, Coptic, Armenian, Georgian, Greek and Latin).

We are seeking to appoint a research associate to join a team of five other postdoctoral researchers. The appointee will have responsibility for collecting and researching all the Greek and Latin epigraphic evidence (including graffiti and other ‘informal’ inscriptions). She/He will also be expected to produce sole-authored articles on aspects of the epigraphic evidence for the cult of saints. She/He will report to the Principal Investigator, Professor Bryan Ward-Perkins.

The appointee will have a completed doctorate in a relevant field, excellent knowledge of Latin, Ancient Greek and English, plus a working knowledge of other principal western academic languages. She/He will have extensive experience of working with epigraphic evidence and detailed knowledge of the historical context of late-antique Christianity.

The post is available from 1 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed-term of 2 years. For an informal discussion about this role, please contact Professor Bryan Ward-Perkins (bryan.ward-perkins@history.ox.ac.uk).
