This year’s meeting explores images and representations of dis/ability in all kinds of media – pictures, texts, objects – and genres. Combining the perspectives of various historical approaches, it is particularly dedicated to the history of arts. In terms of dis/ability history this discipline offers a broad field of work which still requires systematic research.

The meeting will be organized as a workshop centering on discussions instead of on paper-based lectures. Contributors are asked to inspire these open talks by sending in exemplary materials such as one or two pictures, short texts resp. passages of texts etc. All participants will be provided with these sources well ahead.

Five panels will deal with specific subjects of particular importance: emotions, pain, disfigurement, portraits, and categories of gender. Your contribution may suit this structure but you are also welcome to offer other topics.

The workshop’s international dimension is reflected by using both English and German as conference languages. Translators will support your active participation. As we are aiming for the greatest possible accessibility, sign language interpreters might be present as well.
Contributors’ expenses for travelling and accommodation will be covered by the University of Bremen
