Colloque – Flesh, Gold and Wood. The Saint-Denis altarpiece in Liège and the question of partial paint practices in the 16th century

The recent treatment of the Brussels altarpiece of the Church of St Denis in Liège by the KIK-IRPA has yielded much new information on the genesis and execution of this unique and monumental work of art. Above all, it has uncovered a partial polychromy that is exceptional in the context of the former Netherlands and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège in the 16th century. This unexpected discovery raises questions about the use of this type of polychromy in these regions. The conference will consider the new findings on this altarpiece and discuss the issues raised. The discovery of partial polychromy will also be placed in the context of European tradition (and that of German-speaking countries in particular). A comparison with analogous practices on other supports than wood will facilitate the exploration of these topics in depth and to reflect on their formal implications for sculpture.

Le récent traitement par l’IRPA du retable bruxellois de l’église Saint-Denis à Liège a fourni une riche moisson d’informations nouvelles sur la genèse et la mise en œuvre de cette pièce monumentale unique. Elle a surtout mis en évidence une polychromie partielle tout à fait exceptionnelle dans le contexte des Pays-Bas et de la principauté de Liège au xvie siècle. Cette découverte inattendue interpelle sur la place de ce type de polychromie dans ces régions. Le colloque fera le point sur les connaissances aujourd’hui largement renouvelées qui touchent à ce retable autant que sur les mystères qui continuent à l’entourer. La réunion contextualisera d’autre part la découverte de cette semi-polychromie en s’attachant à l’ampleur de ce phénomène en Europe (et singulièrement dans les pays germaniques). Un comparatisme avec des pratiques analogues en usage sur d’autres supports que le bois permettra de réfléchir à ses enjeux et à ses implications formelles pour la sculpture.
