We are pleased to announce that the first biennial symposium Environmental History in the Medieval and Early Modern Low Countries will take place on 25-26 October 2024 at Leiden University. This symposium is dedicated to sharing recent research, work in progress, and points of discussion in the field of environmental history conducted by scholars in the Netherlands and Belgium. The two-day program will include, on Friday 25 October, plenary sessions where senior and junior scholars, postdocs, PhD and ResMA-students will present recent/current research and state-of-field overviews (clusters of 20 minutes presentations, 10 minutes Q&A) concerning environmental history. This is followed by a roundtable discussion on ‘Approaches to Environmental History in the Medieval and Early Modern Low Countries’. On Saturday 26 October, prof. dr. Richard Hoffmann (York University, Toronto) will give a keynote lecture.

If you would like to present your research at the symposium, please send an abstract (max. 300 words) and short biography to the organizers (Claire Weeda, c.v.weeda@hum.leidenuniv.nl; and Tim Soens, tim.soens@uantwerpen.be) by 15 March 2024. All topics and fields regarding medieval and early modern environmental history are welcome, including, but not limited to, water, landscape, climate, biodiversity and natural life. Contributors can present state-of-field overviews or ongoing research.

ResMA-students can earn 1 ECTS by actively attending this event (more information to be announced).
