Publication – « A Cultural History of Ideas in the Medieval Age », éd. Dallas G. Denery

This volume of A Cultural History of Ideas examines the roughly thousand years, fromthe end of the Roman Empire to the cusp ofthe Reformation, which make up the MiddleAges. Each chapter investigates the ideas andpractices associated with a specific theme-knowledge, the human self, ethics, politics, nature, religion, rhetoric, art, and history-inorder to reveal the tangle of social, cultural, andreligious factors that shaped, and were shapedby, medieval intellectual life. Central to thisproject is the need to read against the grain, revealing the limits and suppressions in both themedieval sources themselves and more recentscholarship on the period. Taken together, thesenine essays, written from a variety of disciplinaryperspectives, depict the complexities of medievallife and thought, their unique characteristics, and their influence on subsequent centuries.
