Atelier – The Three Kings and Their Stallions – a nativity illumination workshop

The Nativity was one of the key markers on the medieval Christian calendar, with illuminations marking separate episodes of it. Equids played important roles at the Nativity, and in the previous years we explored and copied the images of the donkey and the ox present at the Nativity and of the Virgin riding the donkey sideways. This year, we will turn to the three kings, who joined the Holy Family riding atop elite horses, if we are to believe medieval illuminators. In this workshop, we will learn how the Magi became the Three Kings, explore a selection of visual images and copy one of them to create a Christmas card. The speakers are Dr Anastasija Ropa and Dr Jurg Gassmann.

Please register in advance by sending an expression of interest to anastasija.ropa@trivent-publishing.eu, if you want to join the practical part, so I could send the sample miniatures and a list of materials in advance. Otherwise feel free to drop in for the lecture and a chat.

The event is sponsored by Cheiron: The International Journal of Equine and Equestrian History. It will be recorded and shared on the Cheiron journal YouTube channel. The event is free of charge.
