The journal Micrologus and the series Micrologus Library were created in 1993 and 1998 respectively within SISMEL (The International Society for the Study of the Latin Middle Ages, in Florence), with the intent to build bridges between the different disciplines that investigate the relationship between nature, sciences and societies in the Middle Ages. Sciences such as medicine, geometry and astrology, but also alchemy and magic, shaped new perceptions of time and space and new attitudes towards the body, also captured in literary texts. They also contributed to redrawing the geography of European culture and its relations with non- Latin cultures. Under the aegis of Micrologus some sixty conferences have been organized on a wide variety of topics, particularly in the field of the history of the body and that of nature, and favouring a cross-disciplinary approach, from philosophy to literature and the history of images. This volume presents some fifty introductions or conclusions that accompanied the publication of the proceedings of those conferences. Arranged in chronological order in three sections – Body, Sciences and Intellectual Laboratories –, they reflect the richness of the collective work accomplished by the numerous scholars who have led the Micrologus conferences for more than thirty years.
