The Conference: ‘The Periphery at the Center.” Islands and Islandness in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean,” aims at reassessing the political, religious, socio-cultural, and economic significance of insular geographies in relation to the great empires and polities across two millennia of Mediterranean history. The Conference: ‘The Periphery at the Center.” Islands and Islandness in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean,” aims at reassessing the political, religious, socio-cultural, and economic significance of insular geographies in relation to the great empires and polities across two millennia of Mediterranean history. Proposals for panels and/or individual papers for the parallel strands are welcome on the following topics:
– “Islandness:” beyond the Core-Periphery Model
– Cities of islands: urban spaces between connectivity and isolation
– Island cultural networks in periods of transition
– Insular Government Structures in the Mediterranean
– Ecclesiastical Institutions on Mediterranean Islands
– Insular economies of scale
Submission Requirements:
An abstract (max 400 words) including the title and authors of the paper as well as 5 keywords, and a brief biographical note should be sent to the organizers of the conference Dr. Filip Malesevic (filip.malesevic@bilkent.edu.tr ) and Dr. Luca Zavagno (luca.zavagno@bilkent.edu.tr ) by 15 May 2026.
Accepted paper authors will be notified by email no later than 31 May 2026. Selected papers will be considered for publication in a volume to be issued by a leading academic publisher.
