Conférence – « Entre histoire et littérature : autour des Écrits spirituels du Moyen Âge », par Cédric Giraud et Laurence Moulinier-Brogi

Cédric Giraud (prom. 2002), professeur de langue et de littérature latines médiévales à l’université de Genève, et Laurence Moulinier-Brogi, professeur d’histoire médiévale à l’Université Lumière Lyon 2, donnent une conférence intitulée « Entre histoire et littérature : autour des Écrits spirituels du Moyen Âge ».


La publication récente d’un volume dans la « Bibliothèque de la Pléiade » (Gallimard) portant sur les Écrits spirituels du Moyen Âge offre l’occasion de s’interroger sur l’existence d’un genre littéraire spirituel. Existe-t-il des critères pertinents pour isoler, au sein de la vaste production écrite du Moyen Âge, ce qui relève de la spiritualité ? Ces textes forment-ils à proprement parler un corpus de nature littéraire ? Comment donner sens à ces textes dans l’histoire plus vaste du christianisme médiéval, de la « Réforme grégorienne » du xie siècle à l’âge de la Devotio moderna (xive-xve s.) ? C’est à ces questions, et à quelques autres, que Cédric Giraud et Laurence Moulinier-Brogi s’efforceront de répondre en partant de leur expérience d’éditeurs de textes, de traducteurs pour la Pléiade et d’historiens.

Appel à contribution – Ritual: Practice, Performance, Perception

Rituals pervade human life. From small or mundane rituals like brushing our teeth or making one’s daily coffee, to grand ceremonies that mark important life stages, rituals are everywhere. This has prompted reflection on what rituals are, on what can be considered as ritual. Ceræ: An Australasian Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies invites essays that analyse rituals of all kinds: public and private, communal and solitary, secular and religious, rapidly changing and long-lasting. It also welcomes theoretically- or methodologically-focused contributions.

Authors may address, but are not limited to:

  • Royal rituals: coronations, births, or marriage consummations etc.
  • How rituals can be used as an element of identity and alterity
  • Subversive and subverted ritual: witchcraft trials, historical (mis)perceptions of Jewish rites etc.
  • Sacred landscapes and rituals focused on/in the natural world
  • Ritual as a medium for memory and memorialisation
  • Sacrifices, magic, religious rites and their intercultural reception
  • Medieval and early modern political rituals such as guild processions
  • Ritual represented in medievalism, including film, fantasy, literature, and art

We invite submissions encompassing all aspects of the late classical, medieval, and early modern world. There are no geographical restrictions. As an interdisciplinary journal, Ceræ encourages submissions from archaeology, art history, historical ecology, literature, linguistics, intellectual history, musicology, politics, social studies, and beyond.

Full length articles should be 5000-8000 words, excluding references. Ceræ also accepts short notices of up to 3000 words. Themed submissions must be submitted by 30 April 2022. For submission instructions, please visit our page on submission guidelines.

We also accept non-themed submissions throughout the year. Ceræ particularly encourages submissions from postgraduate and early career researchers, and offers a $200 (AUD) annual prize for the best postgraduate/ECR essay. Further information on our annual essay prize can be found here.

SCRIPTO Summer School St. Gallen – Schriftkultur des Mittelalters (5. bis 15. Jh.)

Die SCRIPTO Summer School St. Gallen (SSSS) bietet eine Einführung in die Geschichte, die Formen und den kulturellen Wert der abendländischen Schrift.

Die Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen und der Lehrstuhl für Lateinische Philologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen organisieren ihre dritte Sommerschule zur Schriftkultur des Mittelalters (5. bis 15. Jahrhundert) in der Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen vom 16. bis zum 20. Mai 2022. Diese SCRIPTO Summer School St. Gallen (SSSS) bietet eine Einführung in die Geschichte, die Formen und den kulturellen Wert der abendländischen Schrift. Den öffentlichen Gastvortrag hält Dr. Christine Jakobi-Mirwald über „Da fehlen die Worte – Pergamentnähte in mittelalterlichen Handschriften“. Die Teilnahmezahl ist auf 10 Personen begrenzt. Die Teilnahmegebühr beträgt 475,00 EUR/500,00 CHF (Unterkunft ist in der Gebühr enthalten). Es besteht die Möglichkeit, ein Dr. Alfred-Vinzl-Stipendium oder ein Stipendium der Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen in Höhe von 650,00 EUR zu erhalten (Wenn Sie sich auch für ein Stipendium bewerben möchten, schicken Sie bitte zusammen mit Ihrer Bewerbung für SSSS eine separate Bewerbung für ein Stipendium). Webinaire – Wat kunnen pardonbrieven betekenen voor erfgoedvrijwilligers ?

Doodslag, fraude, schaking, ambtsmisbruik… wie in het ancien regime voor een zwaar misdrijf werd vervolgd, kon hiervoor gratie vragen aan de vorst. Het Rijksarchief bewaart duizenden pardonbrieven waarin telkens het relaas van het misdrijf omstandig staat opgetekend. Deze brieven bieden zo een unieke blik op alledaagse lokale geschiedenis. Jammer genoeg zijn deze bronnen nog nauwelijks ontsloten. Het nieuwe PARDONS-project wil daar verandering in brengen.

In dit webinar lichten we al de sluier over de eerste resultaten. Je krijgt een impressie van de rijkdom van deze bronnen en ziet hoe jij en andere vrijwilligers kunnen helpen met de ontsluiting ervan. Op die manier draag je bij aan een grootschalig wetenschappelijk project en tegelijkertijd kan je misschien ook werken met bronnen uit je eigen dorp of regio en een eigen artikel uitwerken.

In een eerste fase zijn vooral documenten uit het oude hertogdom Brabant online beschikbaar, maar dit aanbod wordt binnenkort uitgebreid tot de andere gewesten.

Publication – Francesco Barbaro, « De Re Uxoria », a cura di Claudio Griggio e Chiara Kravina

Il De re uxoria fu donato nel 1416 a Lorenzo de’ Medici il Vecchio per le nozze fiorentine con Ginevra Cavalcanti. Il trattato può essere assunto a simbolo precoce dei rapporti politici e culturali tra Firenze e Venezia in età umanistica. Divenuto una sorta di best seller, si diffuse in tutta Europa, reinterpretato fino ai nostri giorni alla luce dei diversi ambiti storici e letterari. L’opera svolge un ruolo importante nel recupero massiccio degli auctores, greci in particolare, operato dal Barbaro in coerenza con il nuovo programma di studi umanistici avviato in area veneta da Guarino Veronese. Lo scritto armonizza sapientemente l’aneddotica classica con la contemporaneità veneziana, risultando gradevole anche per un lettore ‘curioso’ dei nostri giorni.

Publication – « The Byzantine Platonists, 284-1453 », dir. Frederick Lauritzen et Sarah Klitenic Wear

This volume brings together articles by sixteen leading scholars on a cross-section of Platonists authors—Christian and non-Christian—from early through late Byzantium philosophy, including the Capaddocians, Cyril, Proclus, Damascius, Dionysius, George of Pisidia, Nicetas Stethatos, Nikephoros Choumenos, Psellos, and George Palamas. The reception of Byzantine thought in the Latin tradition is also considered. The articles collectively show development in the Greek East on ontological issues such as the doctrine of the soul, as well as theological concepts of the One/God and Trinity within a hierarchical universe. The volume considers exegetical questions relating to the use of Plato and the Platonists by Byzantine Christian authors.

Frederick Lauritzen is Historian at the Scuola Grande di San Marco, Venezia. Sarah Klitenic Wear is professor of classics, Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Publication – Paroma Chatterjee, « Between the Pagan Past and Christian Present in Byzantine Visual Culture. Statues in Constantinople, 4th-13th Centuries CE »

Up to its pillage by the Crusaders in 1204, Constantinople teemed with magnificent statues of emperors, pagan gods, and mythical beasts. Yet the significance of this wealth of public sculpture has hardly been acknowledged beyond late antiquity. In this book, Paroma Chatterjee offers a new perspective on the topic, arguing that pagan statues were an integral part of Byzantine visual culture. Examining the evidence in patriographies, chronicles, novels, and epigrams, she demonstrates that the statues were admired for three specific qualities – longevity, mimesis, and prophecy; attributes that rendered them outside of imperial control and endowed them with an enduring charisma sometimes rivaling that of holy icons. Chatterjee’s  interpretations refine our conceptions of imperial imagery, the Hippodrome, the Macedonian Renaissance, a corpus of secular objects, and Orthodox icons. Her book offers novel insights into Iconoclasm and proposes a more truncated trajectory of the holy icon in medieval Orthodoxy than has been previously acknowledged.

Paroma Chatterjee is associate professor of art history at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Living Icons: The ‘Vita’ Image in Byzantium and Italy, 11th-13th Centuries (Cambridge University Press, 2014).
