The letter was the most widespread means of communication in the Middle Ages and the most practiced literary genre also among women. This volume, produced under the auspices of the Medieval Women in Letters project from the MedioEvA Center (University of Siena, Rome Sapienza and Tours), explores the rhetorical, literary, thematic, and historical-cultural aspects of the female epistolography in the Middle Ages. Latin literature constitutes a cohesive element between the various vernacular languages that were establishing themselves during the Middle Ages, and this volume promotes the study of women’s literature and medieval woman by adopting a consistently comparative and translinguistic method, analyzing women’s literature in all the languages used in medieval Europe.
The methodology focuses on the literary tradition, especially the linguistic and philological spheres. Specialists in Germanic, Middle Latin, Romance, Arabic, Italian, and Byzantine literature discuss published and unpublished female letters, with particular focus on the main challenges that female writing in the Middle Ages presents, including: authorship, the relationship between copyist and author, the degree of female literacy, training structures, the role of writing in the various seasons of the Middle Ages, and the modern critical reception of female epistolography. As a result, this volume seeks to dismantle obsolete critical prejudices and redefine a literary canon that fully includes women.
Elisabetta Bartoli, the editor of the volume, is the PI of the MEWIL project, funded by Unisi. She teaches medieval Latin literature at Siena University and is Director of MedioEvA, a centre for the female medieval literature (Medioeva.unisi.it). Her principal research topics are the ars dictandi and female literature. She has published some critical editions and she edited (with Christian Hoegel), for Brepols, the volume Medieval Letters: between Fiction and Document (2015).

This book offers a selection of edited and translated sources that shed light on law, society and political culture in Germany between the mid-fourteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries, enabling readers to discover the tumultuous late medieval and Reformation era in the Holy Roman Empire in unprecedented depth. The selection includes all the major legislation issued in the Empire from the Golden Bull of 1356 to the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. Most of these laws, which have shaped the constitutional development of Germany in its various incarnations down to the twenty-first century, are translated into English here for the first time. Thematic chapters cover the unique elective monarchy, imperial diets, plans for imperial and ecclesiastical reform, alliances and associations, warfare and arbitration and lordship and administration at local levels. Each theme is contextualised by the author’s detailed interpretive prefaces.

The Department of Culture and Language invites applications for a 3-year postdoc position in Dominican studies within the CODICUM project.
The position is expected to begin 1 April 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work on Work Package 3 of CODICUM, led by PI prof. Lars Boje Mortensen.
About the CODICUM project
CODUCUM is a collaborative project on Nordic medieval intellectual and book history based on the c. 50.000 medieval Latin manuscript fragments kept in the major archives and libraries in the Nordic countries. The project is financed by an ERC synergy grant (2025-31) and is led by four PIs at the Universities of Bergen, Helsinki, Copenhagen and SDU in Odense. The ambition of the project is rewriting medieval Nordic book history with traditional humanities approaches combined with a substantial science element in terms of spectrometric parchment analysis of proteins and DNA.
Job description and requirements
The successful applicant is expected to have expert Latin, palaeographical as well as text and book historical skills. The postdoc project involves identifying fragments with Dominican texts or related to Dominican environments in order to uncover patterns of educational and learned networks in the period c. 1250 – c. 1450 across the Nordic countries (the Dominican province of Dacia) and their relations to European centres of learning.
It will count as a plus if the applicant has already published within mendicant studies
The position also demands good collaborative skills as the project will be conducted in coordination with a number of other fragment researchers, including textual scholars, curators, IT infrastructure specialists and biochemists.
The postdoc is expected to participate actively in CODICUM project meetings, workshops etc.
Administrative tasks, such as co-organizing a conference, writing reports and more, will form part of the job.
The postdoc is also expected to contribute actively to outreach activities, such as blog writing, working with the holding institutions and more.

The Teaching Medieval Women project is a collaboration between teachers and academics to bring the experiences of medieval women into the teaching of medieval history at school. This project was borne out of a shared realisation that women are still substantially under-represented in many of the medieval history classes taught at school in the UK, at KS3, KS4 and A-Level.
The women and themes we highlight derive from a diverse geographical, religious and ethnic spread, emphasising a fresh and global perspective to the study of the medieval period in schools and colleges.
The group aims to bring together teachers and academics to exchange our respective knowledge and expertise, to learn about the challenges involved in driving change forward, and to develop solutions, as well as producing a variety of co-created materials that are attractive, innovative, engaging, and based on recent historical scholarship and educational pedagogy.
Deutsch-Französische Perspektiven der Kathedralforschung nach dem Brand von Notre-Dame
23.-27. März 2026
Organisiert vom Deutschen Forum für Kunstgeschichte (DFK Paris), der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg und der Universität Aix-Marseille, mit der Unterstützung der Deutsch-Französischen Hochschule/Université Franco-allemande
Bewerbungsfrist: 11. Januar 2026 Wiss. Leitung: Stephan Albrecht, Julia Drost, Andreas Hartmann-Virnich, Anna Chiara Knoblauch
