Séminaire – Le Moyen Âge des Anciens. Épisodes de la transmission et de la fortune médiévales des classiques latins

Il n’est guère nécessaire de rappeler l’importance, pour la formation et le développement de la culture médiévale, de l’héritage ancien gréco-romain : à côté de – et parfois en concurrence avec – l’élément chrétien, l’Antiquité classique a toujours déployé son influence sur la pensée, la littérature et l’art du Moyen Âge européen. Cette influence s’exerçant avant tout à travers les textes classiques, que l’on n’a presque jamais cessé de lire et d’apprécier – au moins pour ce qui concerne les textes en latin, la connaissance du grec n’étant répandue que de manière limitée et intermittente –, son poids ne peut être estimé correctement qu’en retraçant la vie de la littérature ancienne à travers le Moyen Âge.

Grâce à l’analyse de plusieurs cas d’étude – étalés entre le XII^e et le XV^e siècle, entre l’Angleterre normande et l’Italie humaniste, et avec une attention particulière pour les florilèges et les compilations – on s’efforcera d’explorer les manières dont la lecture et la réutilisation des classiques latins ont nourri l’activité intellectuelle des écrivains médiévaux.

Appel à contribution – Medieval Germany Workshop 2026

Organisers: the German Historical Institute London and the German History Society
Venue: GHIL

This one-day workshop on the history of medieval Germany (broadly defined) offers an opportunity for researchers from Europe and the wider English-speaking world to meet at the German Historical Institute in London. Participants will be able to discuss their work in a relaxed and friendly setting and to learn more about each other’s research.

Proposals for short papers of 10–15 minutes are invited from researchers at all career stages with an interest in any aspect of the history of medieval Germany. Participants are encouraged to present work in progress, highlight research questions and approaches, and point to yet unresolved challenges of their projects. Presentations will be followed by a discussion.

Participation is free of charge and includes lunch and dinner. The GHIL and the GHS will also provide a contribution towards travel expenses. Accommodation costs cannot be reimbursed. Support is available for postgraduate and early career researchers: up to £150, for travel within the UK (excluding London) and up to €300 for an economy round trip from Europe. Please indicate your interest in travel support in your application.

Please send your submission—which must include a title, an abstract of c.200 words, and a biographical note of no more than c.100 words—to Thomas Kaal: t.kaal@ghil.ac.uk. Publication – Marie-Luce Chênerie, « Le chevalier errant dans les romans arthuriens en vers des XIIe et XIIIe siècles »

À la figure du chevalier errant, personnage de synthèse plus que n’importe quel autre type héroïque de la littérature médiévale, ce livre de référence consacre une étude fondée sur le corpus des romans arthuriens en vers des xiie et xiiie siècles dont Chrétien de Troyes reste le promoteur et le point constant de référence. Il s’intéresse aux interférences de la mémoire, de l’imaginaire et de la réalité à partir d’une approche sollicitant le vocabulaire, l’histoire conçue comme l’étude d’un groupe social (l’aristocratie) et la symbolique. Il s’agit d’un ouvrage de base indispensable à qui s’intéresse à la typologie du monde arthurien, mais aussi d’une véritable somme car il offre un répertoire de renseignements détaillés sur les protagonistes des fictions arthuriennes en vers depuis Chrétien de Troyes jusqu’à l’Escanor de Girard d’Amiens et au roman de Claris et Laris. Par ses relevés et ses notes, ses précieuses mises au point, son importante bibliographie et ses quatre index, Marie-Luce Chênerie offre aux lecteurs une sorte de mappa mundi arthurienne grâce à laquelle on peut facilement s’orienter dans une matière aussi vaste que déroutante.

Appel à contribution – Ovid’s Metamorphoses through Time: Paratexts, Translations and Iconography

We are delighted to open a call for papers for the closing conference of the research project “The Transformation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Modern Printing: text, image and new readership” (MedOvid, PID2023-153036NA-I00) entitled Ovid’s Metamorphoses through Time: Paratexts, Translations and Iconography to be held in Barcelona on the 2nd and 3rd of July 2026 (Facultat de Filologia i Comunicació, Universitat de Barcelona).

The MedOvid project studies textual and paratextual changes of the medieval vernacular translations of the Latin poem from their manuscript form to their circulation as printed books (particularly, from 1480s to 1550). We focus largely on paratextual materials (prologues, epilogues, letters of dedication, marginalia, engravings) as a means to explore how the text is used or presented in a new light for a wider audience, and how this contributes to the emergent philological discourses on the translation of classical texts in the early modern period. We also pay attention to the role of women in these printed translations (as dedicatees, sponsors, readers).

The conference aims to bring together scholars who can contribute on the following topics:

Medieval and humanistic commentaries and translations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (preferably translations and commentaries of the whole poem).
Later translations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (17th-21st centuries).
Representation of episodes from the Metamorphoses in medieval and Renaissance visual arts.
From manuscript to print: paratextual materials, new readership, uses, censorship, the role of women in Ancient and Medieval works in printing. (This topic is open to the study of works other than the Metamorphoses. We encourage researchers on medieval and Renaissance Catalan literature to present papers on this research topic).

Submissions: Please send a short biography (a link to an institutional page or similar resource is also acceptable), a provisional title and an abstract of no more than 300 words by Thursday, 15th of January 2026 either to Gemma Pellissa Prades (gemmapellisa@ub.edu) or Pere Fàbregas (pfabregas@ub.edu). Papers should be 20 minutes long (followed by a discussion). The languages of the conference will be Catalan, English, French, Italian, and Spanish. Papers will be selected according to their intrinsic relevance and affinity with the project’s subject matter. Authors will be notified by Monday, 2nd of March.

Publication – Jean-René Valette, « Chrétien de Troyes ou les langages de l’amour courtois »

Si l’amour courtois est lié à Chrétien de Troyes, il le doit à son Lancelot, le Chevalier de la charrette, pour lequel Gaston Paris forgea cette expression presque introuvable au Moyen Âge, marquant ainsi la place centrale de son œuvre entre lyrismes d’oc et d’oïl, romans d’Antiquité et matière tristanienne, à côté du rôle joué par les doctrines de l’amour de Dieu dans l’élaboration de ce premier idéal laïque. À cette double intertextualité (vers les poètes et les théologiens), se joint un registre intratextuel, fondé sur les liens que nouent entre eux les romans de Chrétien, d’Érec et Énide à Cligès et d’Yvain au Conte du Graal, créant un univers fractionné et articulé – une petite Comédie humaine où le trouvère traite du problème de l’amour et de la relation entre hommes et femmes en des cohérences complexes. Et peu importe, dès lors, que l’amour courtois ait été une réalité historique, un jeu ou une fantasmatique : il s’offre ici comme un espace dialectique où se définissent et confrontent trois langages, la fine, la fole et la bone amor, selon ces mots devenus concepts. Car si les littératures d’oc et d’oïl du XII^e siècle forment le creuset d’une nouvelle érotique, l’amour que l’on dit courtois est aussi le produit d’une pensée critique, dont témoigne un immense capital herméneutique.

Colloque – Der mitteldeutsche Raum und das Königtum vom Interregnum bis zu Kaiser Karl IV. (1250–1378)

Wie „königsfern“ oder „königsnah“ war der thüringisch-sächsische Raum in den rund 120 Jahren zwischen dem Ende der Staufer und der Herrschaft Karls IV. wirklich? War das Engagement der Könige in Thüringen und Meißen nur ein temporäres Zwischenspiel, das mit der Durchsetzung der wettinischen Ansprüche 1307 endete? Oder war die politische Entwicklung in Mitteldeutschland nach dem sog. Interregnum offen für verschiedene Herrschaftskonzepte, etwa ein „Königsland“? Welche Rolle spielten neben den römisch-deutschen Königen und den Wettinern die Grafen und Herren sowie die Städte? Und wie wandelten sich die politischen Interessen des Königtums gegenüber den verschiedenen Akteuren in diesem Raum?

Die Tagung widmet sich diesen Schwerpunkten im Zeitraum von der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts bis in die zweite Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage nach den Bindungen zwischen dem mitteldeutschen Raum und dem Königtum. Ziel ist es dabei, eine neue Verortung der mitteldeutschen Akteure in ihren Beziehungen zum Königtum zu ermöglichen.

Die Tagung wird von der Professur für Mittelalterliche Geschichte der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen in Kooperation mit der Friedrich Christian Lesser-Stiftung und dem Editionsprojekt ‚Codex diplomaticus Saxoniae‘ der Sächsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig veranstaltet.

Publication – « Peindre en France. Trente ans de recherche sur les manuscrits à peintures (1440-1520) », éd. Frédéric Elsig, Samuel Gras, Dominique Vanwijnsberghe

Organisée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France du 16 octobre 1993 au 16 janvier 1994, l’exposition Quand la peinture était dans les livres a fortement marqué les esprits. Son catalogue, rédigé par François Avril et Nicole Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France, 1440-1520, s’est imposé comme une référence incontournable. En renouvelant en profondeur l’étude de la peinture française à la charnière du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance, cet ouvrage a ouvert de nouvelles voies à la recherche.
Trente ans plus tard, le présent volume, issu d’un colloque organisé à l’Université de Genève, revient sur l’héritage scientifique de ce catalogue monumental. Il éclaire son influence durable, présente un état de la question sur les recherches menées dans les principales régions distinguées en 1993 et les nombreuses découvertes et pistes de recherche qu’il a fait émerger dans l’étude de l’enluminure et de la peinture françaises.

Un hommage critique et passionné à une publication fondatrice, pour tous ceux que fascine la peinture des livres.

Formation – Doctoral and Postdoctoral Spring School: Arabo-Byzantine Workshop: Towards a Cross-Disciplinary Analysis of Eastern Mediterranean Sources

A fresh understanding of medieval Eastern Mediterranean history requires a careful and integrated reading of a wide range of primary sources. Textual, documentary, and material sources (such as manuscripts, papyri, coins, and seals) all offer distinct perspectives, yet they are often studied in disciplinary and linguistic isolation. An effective historical analysis demands not only philological precision, but also a solid methodological approach that includes close attention to the materiality of these objects: their format, script, language, and context of production. Such features can reveal much about circulation of objects and knowledge, as well as its transmission and usage. This is especially vital when working with sources in Arabic and Greek, the two dominant languages of administration, culture, and daily life across much of the medieval Eastern Mediterranean. Moreover, bilingual or multilayered sources (such as Graeco-Arabic manuscripts and papyri, or Arabo-Byzantine coinage) provide invaluable insight into contact zones and hybrid identities. A critical and comparative reading across both source typologies and linguistic traditions thus allows historians to reconstruct cultural and event-driven history in a more comprehensive and dynamic way, uncovering layers of meaning that would remain hidden in a monolingual or single-source approach.

The aim of this workshop is to equip participants with both a nuanced understanding of the different typologies of medieval sources and the methodological tools necessary to address their diversity and fluidity in a rigorous way. In addition, the workshop seeks to foster dialogue between experts and early-career researchers from a range of disciplines (including Classical, Byzantine, and Islamic Studies) who have often worked in isolation within the boundaries of their respective fields.

The workshop will be organized over five thematic days, each dedicated to a specific category of sources for the study of medieval Eastern mediterranean history (paleography/codicology, diplomatics, sigillography/numismatics, papyrology, and philology) and their critical and comparative analysis. Each afternoon, two participants will present their own work (30-minute presentations followed by 15 minutes of discussion). Each day will conclude with either a case study or a practical session designed to build on and integrate the material covered in the morning sessions.

Practical Information
1. Eligible Participants: Doctoral and early-career researchers in Classics, Islamic Studies, or History (broadly intended) from any university and of any nationality. Training in Greek or Arabic paleography or philology is not required, but it is welcome. A working knowledge of both Greek and Arabic is required.
2. Venues: Rome — École française de Rome [Piazza Navona 62]; Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo [Piazza dell’Orologio 4].
3. Costs: Registration, lunches, and accommodation are free of charge. Participants are responsible for their own travel and dinner expenses.
4. Language: English.
5. Application Deadline: 19 December 2025, 12:00 noon (CET).

Requirements
Applications must include the following documents (in English):
1. A Curriculum Vitae;
2. A one-page summary of the doctoral dissertation or postdoctoral project;
3. A one-page motivation letter outlining the candidate’s future projects and explaining their interest in the workshop.

The selection will be made by a joint committee from the École française de Rome, the Università degli Studi di Palermo, and the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo. The results will be communicated no later than 30 January 2026.

Admitted participants will be accommodated at the École française de Rome (in shared or individual rooms) located in Piazza Navona, and lunches will be provided. Travel to/from Rome and dinners will be at the expense of the participants or their home institutions.
