The Fifth Crusade was undoubtedly an important episode in history, occurring during what was probably the most intensive period of crusading in both Europe and the Holy Land. But this event was much more than a military campaign. To contribute to the recent new directions in crusades studies, this colloquium aims to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines who are researching different aspects of the crusading movement around the time of the Fifth Crusade. Papers may be presented in English or French.
Proposals for papers (20 min.) are invited for any aspect of the Fifth Crusade, which may include the following topics:
- Aftermath of the Fourth Crusade
- Events of the Fifth Crusade
- The Crusade of Frederick II and Crusading after 1221
- Preaching and Pilgrimage
- Papal Influence and the Fourth Lateran Council
- Diplomacy
- Secular and Religious Power
- Byzantium
- Ayyubids, Mongols and Mamluks
- Trade Networks in the Eastern Mediterranean
