Postgraduate training workshop
Date: Tuesday 29 January 2019
Time: 10am – 4pm
Venue: National Library of Scotland, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh
Organiser: Dr Joanna Tucker (University of Glasgow)
This one-day workshop will introduce postgraduates to medieval manuscripts known as cartularies. As well as presenting the latest research on cartularies, the workshop will give students hands-on experience of using them in research. It will also highlight key issues for curating manuscripts like cartularies for researchers and the public. In particular, we will discuss how the physicality of these manuscripts (their binding, structure, and scribes) is as important as their contents for understanding their function. Some cartularies from the National Library of Scotland will be used as live examples. The workshop will be led by Dr Joanna Tucker and Prof. Dauvit Broun from the University of Glasgow, along with manuscript curators from the National Library of Scotland. The workshop is funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. There are nine places available. Each student will receive a bursary to cover costs.
The workshop will cover the following:
• What are cartularies?
• How to analyse a cartulary manuscript (including the binding, physical structure, texts, scribes, and dating the manuscript).
• Hands-on exercise analysing a cartulary from NLS.
• Key questions for curating cartularies (particularly digitising and cataloguing cartularies).
The workshop is open to any postgraduates who use (or hope to use) cartularies or other similar kinds of complex manuscripts in their research, or any students of curation and archive studies. We welcome students from across Scotland, the UK and Europe. No prior knowledge of/experience with cartularies is required!
Bursaries are available for all nine students to cover travel, accommodation and subsistence.
