During the 14th and early 15th centuries, the Papacy directed its attention towards the Mongols. The aim of the Apostolic See was to pursue a universal project that combined the proclamation of the Christian faith with the consolidation of papal authority. Drawing on diplomatic documents, missionary accounts, and medieval chronicles, this volume examines the ambitions of the Papacy and reconstructs the relationship between the Apostolic See and the Mongol world. Central to the analysis are the activities of the Franciscan and Dominican friars, as well as the role of the apostolatus ad Tartaros as a tool to assert authority and counter the Antipopes, opponents of the Apostolic See. The volume thus offers an original interpretative framework for understanding the final stage of interactions between Latin Christians and the Mongols.
