The rapid development of artificial intelligence is transforming the ways in which cultural heritage institutions work, organise their collections and make them accessible. Archives, libraries and museums are increasingly experimenting with AI for tasks ranging from digitisation and automatic transcription to metadata enrichment, classification, discovery and user engagement. At the same time, these technologies raise fundamental questions about professional expertise, ethics, responsibility, authenticity and access.
The next thematic issue of the Journal Archief- en Bibliotheekwezen in België / Archives et Bibliothèques de Belgique (ABB) invites contributions that examine 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺𝘀, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗴𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. We welcome contributions from archivists, librarians, museum professionals, researchers, academics, digital humanities specialists, information scientists and other practitioners working at the intersection of AI and cultural heritage.
The issue aims to go beyond an overview of the latest AI tools and projects. We are particularly interested in contributions that consider what AI means for the work, responsibilities and professional identity of archivists, librarians and museum professionals.
A central objective of the issue is to make current Belgian expertise, initiatives and professional experiences visible, while situating them within broader international developments. We therefore particularly encourage contributions based on Belgian institutions, collections, projects or professional experiences. Contributions from outside Belgium are also welcome when they offer a clear comparative perspective or raise questions that are relevant to the Belgian archival, library or museum sector.
ABB is a scientific journal supported by KBR and the States Archives.
Authors are invited to submit a short proposal (around 4000 characters) before 𝟯𝟬 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 outlining. Proposals may be submitted to abb@kbr.be. The volume is expected to be published in November 2027.
