L'Agenda des Médiévistes

C’est l’histoire d’un héros qui part à la chasse au sanglier et y rencontre son destin. L’histoire d’une amitié impossible que les rivalités de clans changent en haine inexpiable et vengeances sans fin dans un royaume encore à la recherche de son ordre et de ses valeurs. C’est une de nos plus anciennes épopées, celle dont le succès fut le plus large entre le XII^e et le XV^e siècles si l’on en croit le nombre des versions et des manuscrits qui nous en sont parvenus. C’est aussi un tableau remarquablement détaillé, vers les XI^e-XII^e siècles, des relations entre le roi et les grands féodaux comme entre ceux-ci et le haut clergé, et des effets de ces guerres sans fin sur le petit peuple des villes et des campagnes. Les chevauchées s’y déploient de la Lorraine à la Gascogne, de la Flandre à la Bourgogne en témoignant d’une connaissance des lieux étonnamment précise. Si les combats sont souvent d’une extrême violence, la peinture des personnages n’en est pas moins fine et sensible, notamment dans la représentation des liens d’affection mutuelle entre les principaux protagonistes de chaque clan. La traduction qui est ici donnée cherche à en restituer en français moderne toute l’âpreté et la grandeur.

Jean-Pierre Martin, professeur honoraire de l’Université d’Artois, est un spécialiste de l’épopée, et plus particulièrement des chansons de geste auxquelles il a consacré deux essais aux éditions Honoré Champion sous le sous-titre commun de Discours de l’épopée médiévale. Il a par ailleurs publié et traduit chez le même éditeur deux autres chansons de geste, Orson de Beauvais et Beuve de Hamptone.

Fra il XIII e il XIV secolo Bologna si afferma come un laboratorio politico ed economico di grande rilievo, in cui le società delle arti giocano un ruolo cruciale nell’evoluzione della comunità urbana. Nate come gruppi di mutua assistenza e controllo delle professioni, le corporazioni bolognesi assunsero un ruolo di primo piano nel governo della città, soprattutto dopo il tumulto del 1228, quando i rappresentanti delle artes entrarono nelle magistrature comunali e le riorganizzarono. La struttura interna delle corporazioni, le regole che ne disciplinavano l’accesso, i mestieri e le relazioni tra i membri costituiscono, dunque, uno strumento essenziale per comprendere la complessità della vita medievale. Attraverso un’attenta analisi delle fonti statutarie, il volume ricostruisce il funzionamento di queste istituzioni e il loro impatto sul tessuto cittadino, offrendo una prospettiva politica, sociale ed economica sulla storia corporativa e sul suo influsso duraturo sull’identità bolognese.

È assegnista di ricerca e professore a contratto di Storia medievale nel Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Educazione “G. M. Bertin” dell’Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna. Si occupa di fonti normative dei comuni e delle corporazioni dell’area emiliano-romagnola e delle strategie e metodologie per l’insegnamento e l’apprendimento della storia nei contesti scolastici. Ha pubblicato diversi contributi in riviste scientifiche e ha curato, con Beatrice Borghi, il terzo volume della Bibliografia statutaria italiana 2005-2015 (Roma 2017).

These volumes present a selection of papers delivered in Paris at the XV International Congress of the Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale, August 22-26, 2022. The appearance of the term radix positionis in medieval debates inspired the contributors to investigate whether there was something that could be considered radical thought in the Middle Ages and, if so, what the roots of this radical thought were in the different philosophical traditions in various geographical, cultural, religious, and linguistic contexts (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin).

Medieval philosophy often engaged in a quest for origins, but it could also be radical in its methodology or in its attitude when it refused any compromise on its principles or basic concepts, be they innovative or rediscovered. Radicalism could be conceived as extremism in pushing a hypothesis, procedure, or line of inquiry to its limits, leading to extreme positions. Radical thought could mean being intellectually inflexible on principles, obstinate in embracing theses that broke from tradition, progressive but also extremist. The contributions in these volumes thus analyse case-studies of doctrinal conflict, dogmatic struggle, and condemnation by religious or academic institutions, presenting examples of both intellectual courage and philosophical intransigence.

Monica Brinzei is Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de recherche) at CNRS/IRHT and Vice-Director of IRHT. She was the PI of the ERC Starting-Grant THESIS (2012-2018) concerning lectures on the Sentences, and of the ERC Consolidator-Grant Debate (2018-2024) on the principia of Sentences lectures. She is currently the PI of the French consortium of RESTORY Horizon 2020 project (2024-2026). She is co-director of the Brepols series ‘Studia Sententiarum’ and in 2022, she was elected vice president of the SIEPM.

Irene Caiazzo is Senior Research Fellow at CNRS/LEM. Her research is focused on the history of medieval philosophy and science. She is editor-in-chief of the annual journal Archives d’histoire doctrinale et littéraire du Moyen Age. Her major publications include Lectures médiévales de Macrobe: Les Glosae Colonienses super Macrobium (Paris, 2002) and Thierry of Chartres: The Commentary on the De arithmetica of Boethius (Toronto, 2015).

Christophe Grellard is full professor (Directeur d’études) at Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (PSL university) and a member of the Laboratoire d’études des monothéismes (LEM, CNRS). He has published extensively on the topics of medieval epistemology and moral philosophy. He is currently member of the Board of the SIEPM.

Aurélien Robert is Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de recherche) at the CNRS and Director of SPHERE research center (CNRS – Université Paris Cité – Université Paris 1). This volume investigates the vivid and emotionally intense commemoration of the Passion of Christ as a key element in late medieval religious culture. Its goal is to shed light on how the Passion was communicated and on its socio-religious function in late medieval Europe. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the volume analyses the different media involved in this cultural process (sermons, devotional texts, lively performances, statues, images), the multiple forms and languages in which the Passion was presented to the faithful, and how they were expected to respond to it. Key questions concern the strategies used to present the Passion; the interaction between texts, images, and sounds in different media; the dissemination of theological ideas in the public space; the fashioning of an affective response in the audience; and the presence or absence of anti-Jewish commonplaces.

By exploring the interplay among a wide range of sources, this volume highlights the pervasive role of the Passion in late medieval society and in the life of the people of the time.

Pietro Delcorno, Ph.D. (2016) is Associate Professor in Medieval History at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna. He has published widely on medieval preaching and religious theatre and on late medieval social history, including Lazzaro e il ricco epulone: Metamorfosi di una parabola fra Quattro e Cinquecento (Il Mulino, 2014) and In the Mirror of the Prodigal Son: The Pastoral Uses of a Biblical Narrative (c. 1200-1550) (Brill, 2018).

Holly Johnson, Ph.D. (2001) is Professor of English at Mississippi State University. She has published on a variety of topics associated with sermons preached in late medieval England, and she has edited and translated a number of previously unpublished sermons. Her books include The Grammar of Good Friday: Macaronic Sermons of Late Medieval England (Brepols, 2012) and Robert Rypon, Selected Sermons, Vol 1: Feast Days and Saints’ Days (Peeters, 2019).
