Der SFB „Managing Maximilian (1493–1519) – Persona, Politics and Personnel through the Lens of Digital Prosopography“ verfolgt einen neuen interpretativen Zugang zu Maximilians Herrschaft, vormodernem Regieren und Regierungshandeln, indem er systematisch alle Verwaltungsebenen und alle in den Dokumenten der Kanzleien Maximilians I. namentlich erwähnten Akteur:innen der ausgedehnten Herrschaft Maximilians I. unter die Lupe nimmt. So sollen die vielen „hinter“ dem Kaiser bzw. in dessen Namen und Auftrag tätigen Personen und Personengruppen, die den medial als „Universalgenie“ dargestellten Maximilian „gemanagt“ haben, sichtbar gemacht werden – von hochrangigen Mitgliedern des Hofes mit persönlichen Verbindungen zum Herrscher bis hin zu Maultiertreibern.

Eines der zentralen Forschungsergebnisse des SFB wird daher die open access verfügbare prosopographische Datensammlung APIS sein. In diese werden nicht nur Personen, die sich am Hof bzw. im breiteren Umfeld des Kaisers bewegten, sondern auch deren Familienmitglieder, Ämter, Aufenthaltsorte, Werke, usw. aufgenommen. Die Eingabe erfolgt in Form von so genannten „Factoids“: kurzen, entweder aus der Sekundärliteratur, aus edierten Quellen oder direkt aus historischen Originalen gewonnenen biographischen Daten.

Am Ende einer ersten vierjährigen Arbeitsphase (Anfang 2027) soll ein plastisches und komplexes Bild Maximilians I., seiner Regierung, seines Hofes und vor allem der ihn umgebenden Personen – seiner Familie, seiner Höflinge, der Mitglieder des Frauenzimmers sowie der unterschiedlichen Amtsträger und Bediensteten beiderlei Geschlechts – vorliegen. Danach wird etwa Mark Grannoveters Theorie der schwachen Verbindungen („weak ties“) im „maximilianischen Netzwerk“ zu diskutieren und auch zu untersuchen sein, welche Personen als entscheidende Knotenpunkte („hubs“) einzustufen sind, da laut seiner These schwache Beziehungen – z. B. Bekanntschaften, die nicht durch viele gemeinsame Freundschaften gestärkt werden – für Informationsflüsse besonders wichtig sind.

Im Rahmen unseres Workshops möchten wir vor allem jüngeren Historiker:innen (Absolvent:innen, Dissertant:innen und Postdoktorand:innen) eine Plattform bieten, ihre Projekte zu prosopographischen Studien – besonders im Kontext einer Stadt, einer Region, eines fürstlichen oder königlichen Hofes in (Ost-)Mitteleuropa zwischen 1300 und 1600 – vorzustellen und sich über ihre diesbezüglichen Erfahrungen mit den verwendeten Quellen, Methoden und digitalen Tools auszutauschen. Im Mittelpunkt sollen dabei Fragen zur Erfassung prosopographischer Daten, zu deren Handhabung und Weiterverarbeitung sowie zur Anwendbarkeit von Konzepten aus der Sozialen Netzwerkanalyse für die prosopographische Forschung im vormodernen Kontext stehen.

Beiträge aus folgenden Themenfeldern sind besonders willkommen:
– Soziale und institutionelle Netzwerke an spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Höfen und Städten
– Städtische Eliten sowie Gemeinschaften im urbanen Raum (Universitäten, Klöster, Zünfte, Bruderschaften, etc.) und ihre Beziehungen zu Herrschern, Hofbediensteten und anderen Machtzentren
– Mobilität von Personen und Familien zwischen Stadt, Hof und Region
– Dienstverhältnisse, Patronage und Karrieren im Wandel
– Digitale Tools zur Veranschaulichung und Analyse vormoderner sozialer Netzwerke und prosopographischer Zugänge
– Vergleichende Perspektiven auf Herrschaft, Verwaltung und Gesellschaft in Hof- und Stadtkulturen
– Die Rolle von familialen Netzwerken im städtischen und höfischen Leben

Since human beings first looked up at the heavens, the stars and other celestial bodies have played a crucial role in how people have made sense of the cosmos, their societies and the bodies they inhabit.  On April  10-11, 2026, the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies will host its biennial celebration of Popular Culture and the Deep Past (PCDP) at the Ohio State University on the topic of “Star Gazing: Astrology and Astronomy in the Medieval and Renaissance Imagination.”

As in past years, this event will feature a scholarly conference with papers, round tables and keynote lectures by prominent scholars, nested within a Renaissance-faire-like carnival featuring exhibits, gaming, contests, live demonstrations and activities of all kinds. 

This event encourages participants to blur the boundary between what is too easily characterized as an older worldview based in astrology and other superstitions, and the apparently more rational and proto-scientific worldview of astronomy that championed empirical observation along with new techniques and instruments.  It will be fascinating to learn how these two systems overlapped and informed one another both in practice and across a range of representations like art and literature.  Astrological beliefs and practices live on into the present and still shape the way many of us see reality.

We seek papers from faculty, graduate students and others that address any and all aspects of astronomy and astrology in medieval and early modern cultures. 

Topics might include representations of astronomy and astrology in elite and popular media, both past and present; the social, cultural, economic, gendered and political contexts of astronomy and astrology; the material and spatial artifacts associated with astronomy and astrology; the relationship of modern and historical theories and practices relating to astronomy and astrology.

Submission Guidelines: 

Conference presentations will generally be limited to 20 minutes duration, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. They will be organized thematically into sessions of three or four papers each. Other presentations, including music, dance, art, gaming, readings and other activities or displays, will be accommodated more freely according to our resources of space and scheduling. Proposals for virtual presentation are welcome. Please send your presentation ideas to cmrs@osu.edu, including a title, abstract and contact information. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and attached as either a Word document or PDF. Please also submit a short description/synopsis (50 words) that may be made public and used for marketing materials. We will begin evaluating proposals after December 19; submissions after that date will be happily received up until the time of the event, but their inclusion will depend on remaining openings in the schedule.

The PCDP conference generally holds paper presentations on the Friday of the event (April 10). Depending on the number of submissions accepted, additional presentations may be scheduled in tandem with Saturday’s mini Renaissance Fair (April 11) that will otherwise feature a variety of exhibitions, performances and hands-on activities.

In your proposal, please let us know if you’d like to host an exhibition table or demonstration on Saturday in addition to presenting a paper on Friday. If you are only available on Saturday, please let us know.

Le Moyen Âge est un terrain privilégié pour l’observation des tensions entre le multiple et l’un. Les textes comme les images médiévales se construisent souvent par assemblages, transformations et décompositions : unités narratives recomposées dans les compilations, fragments iconographiques intégrés dans de nouveaux cycles, collections de documents organisées selon des logiques variables, œuvres d’art façonnées par l’assemblage de matériaux ou de modèles hétérogènes, sans oublier les pratiques de lecture, de copie et d’exégèse qui multiplient ou unifient les sens.

Ce colloque souhaite interroger les modalités selon lesquelles le Moyen Âge a pensé, articulé et transformé le rapport entre multiplicité et unité. Les pratiques des auteurs, des scribes, des artistes, des commanditaires et des publics s’inscrivent dans un champ où la mise en forme du savoir, de la mémoire et de l’art passe constamment par des opérations d’assemblage, de sélection et de hiérarchisation. Produire de l’unité à partir du multiple signifie ordonner, harmoniser, combiner : que ce soit dans la composition d’un manuscrit composite, dans la structuration d’un cycle iconographique ou dans l’élaboration d’un récit généalogique ou encyclopédique. Mais cette unité, toujours en construction, demeure fragile : elle peut être morcelée, réorganisée, réinterprétée. Les textes, les images et les objets – dans leurs dimensions matérielles, symboliques et intellectuelles – circulent, se transforment, se recomposent ou se défont selon les usages, les milieux et les contextes de réception. Cette interaction se renégocie sans cesse, et se manifeste à travers une tension volontiers perçue, exploitée, instrumentalisée ou contournée. Cette oscillation engage des enjeux essentiels : organisation du savoir, construction de sens, jeux d’autorité, modalités de production et de transmission. Elle invite à repenser la manière dont les sociétés médiévales ont articulé totalité et fragment, harmonie et dispersion, cohérence et hétérogénéité, et comment ces dynamiques ont façonné l’évolution des œuvres, des idées et des formes.

Nous réfléchirons à ces problématiques selon une perspective foncièrement interdisciplinaire. Sont donc particulièrement bienvenues les propositions qui interrogeront :

• Les pratiques de réécriture et leurs implications idéologiques : d’un côté, les formes brèves, les recueils, les florilèges et leurs stratégies d’organisation du savoir ; de l’autre, les processus de condensation, d’expansion ou de recomposition du récit et du texte.
• Les stratégies de remédiation visuelle : comment les cycles iconographiques adaptent, simplifient ou développent des textes, et inversement.
• La mise en cycle de récits, d’images ou de modèles iconographiques préexistants.
• La matérialité de l’objet d’art en diachronie : de la création à la destruction, en passant par le remploi, la réactualisation et la restauration.
• La matérialité du manuscrit comme espace d’assemblage ou de morcèlement : manuscrits-collecteurs, recueils factices, fragments.
• Les formes concises : l’usage de listes, d’annales, de résumés, de tables, de schémas ou d’arbres généalogiques comme dispositifs de structuration et de pensée.
• Les interactions entre texte et image : dispositifs où l’un commente, fragmente ou recompose l’autre, phénomènes de polyphonie visuelle et discursive ;
• Les enjeux cognitifs des opérations de composer/décomposer : mémorisation, classement, hiérarchisation.

L’appel est ouvert à l’ensemble des disciplines relevant des études médiévales : littérature, philologie, histoire, histoire culturelle et sociale, histoire de l’art et études visuelles, codicologie, musicologie, philosophie médiévale, études religieuses, entre autres. Il s’adresse également aux jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs, y compris les étudiants de maitrise, dont les contributions sont encouragées. La participation au colloque pourra, dans la mesure du possible, être soutenue partiellement par l’organisation.

The Multiple and the One. Assemblages and Decompositions in Medieval Texts and Images

The Middle Ages offer a privileged field for observing the tensions between the multiple and the one. Medieval texts and images are often constructed through assemblages, transformations, and decompositions: narrative units recomposed within compilations, iconographic fragments integrated into new cycles, collections of documents organised according to shifting logics, works of art shaped by the juxtaposition of heterogeneous materials or models, along with reading, copying and exegetical practices that multiply or unify meaning.

This conference seeks to explore the ways in which the Middle Ages conceptualised, articulated, and transformed the relationship between multiplicity and unity. In the shaping of knowledge, memory and art, the practices of authors, scribes, artists, patrons, and audiences constantly involve operations of assembly, selection and hierarchy. Producing unity out of multiplicity means ordering, harmonising, combining—whether in the composition of a composite manuscript, the structuring of an iconographic cycle, or the elaboration of a genealogical or encyclopaedic narrative. Yet this unity, always in the process of being fashioned, remains fragile: it may be broken apart, reorganised, or reinterpreted. Texts, images and objects—in their material, symbolic and intellectual dimensions—circulate, transform, recombine, or disintegrate depending on uses, environments, and contexts of reception. This interplay is constantly renegotiated, manifesting in a tension that can be perceived, exploited, instrumentalised or circumvented. Such oscillation raises fundamental issues: the organisation of knowledge, the construction of meaning, dynamics of authority, and the modalities of production and transmission. It invites us to consider how medieval societies articulated totality and fragment, harmony and dispersion, coherence and heterogeneity, and how these dynamics shaped the evolution of works, ideas and forms.

We will address these questions from a resolutely interdisciplinary perspective. We particularly welcome proposals engaging with:

• Practices of rewriting and their ideological implications: on the one hand, brief forms, collections, florilegia and their strategies for organising knowledge; on the other, processes of condensation, expansion, or recomposition of narrative and text.
• Strategies of visual remediation: how iconographic cycles adapt, simplify or develop texts—and vice versa.
• The creation of cycles from pre-existing narratives, images, or iconographic models.
• The materiality of artworks across time: from creation to destruction, including reuse, reactivation and restoration.
• The manuscript as a material space of assembly or dismemberment: collector manuscripts, factitious volumes, fragments.
• Concise forms: the use of lists, annals, summaries, tables, diagrams or genealogical trees as devices for structuring thought.
• Interactions between text and image: configurations in which one comments on, fragments or recomposes the other; phenomena of visual and discursive polyphony.
• Cognitive stakes of composing/decomposing: memory, classification, hierarchy.

This call is open to all disciplines within medieval studies: literature, philology, history, cultural and social history, art history and visual studies, codicology, musicology, medieval philosophy, religious studies, among others. We particularly encourage proposals from early-career researchers, including master’s students. Financial support for participation may be partially offered by the organisers, depending on availability.
