Closes: 17th June 2024

The Role and Department

Following recent expansion, Durham University History Department is now one of the largest centres in the UK for the study of History. We are consistently ranked amongst the top departments in the country by the Complete University Guide, the Times and Sunday Times, and the Guardian University Guide. We place research at the very heart of our varied undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, inducting our students into a community of historians from the outset.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to make an important contribution to the development of the History department’s research while allowing you excellent opportunities to develop your career in an exciting and progressive institution. For more information, please visit our Department pages at .

The Role

The Department of History at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented researcher and scholar to the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the research project ‘Modelling the Black Death and Social Connectivity in Medieval England’, led by Dr Alex Brown and funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Utilising the latest computer modelling developed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we will simulate the spread of the Black Death in England in order to test hypotheses about the spread of the disease and about the connectedness of medieval society. Using historical and archaeological sources, we will reconstruct the broad characteristics of the late medieval popu lation on the eve of the Black Death, such as their location, age, sex, and occupation. This is the ‘static’ part of our model. We will then infer their ‘dynamic’ behavioural patterns, such as where they spent their time and whom they encountered in their daily lives. In order to achieve this, the successful candidate will conduct high-quality research of new archival material and will draw upon a wide range of secondary material in order to construct the necessary datasets that will feed into our computer model.

The successful candidate will join an exciting interdisciplinary team of researchers and will work closely with Co-Investigators in Archaeology (Professors Christopher Gerrard and Rebecca Gowland and a postdoctoral research associate) and in Physics (Professor Frank Krauss and a postdoctoral research associate). The History postdoctoral research associate will be responsible for collating much of the underlying historical data, including drawing material from existing datasets derived from the lay subsidies and poll taxes, and constructing new datasets on, for example, the major communication networks of medieval England. You will collaborate with colleagues in Archaeology to establish variable mortality rates during the Black Death, and with colleagues in Physics to prepare these datasets for our computer simulation.

We welcome applications from those with research interests in the broad field of medieval social and economic history and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with expertise in either digital humanities, medical humanities or who have experience working with large datasets or mapping software such as GIS.

Publication – Wauchier de Denain, « Li Seint Confessor », éd. Ariane Pinche

Appel à contribution – Gender, Identity, and Authority in Late Antiquity

March 20-23, 2025

The Society for Late Antiquity is pleased to announce the sixteenth biennial meeting of Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity, which will be held at The University of Tulsa, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We encourage papers that investigate issues and aspects of gender, identity, and/or authority within the broader late antique world, either in relation to one another or on their own. This thematic scope is intentionally broad, allowing for many different approaches and from a host of disciplines and methodologies. Gender, for example, might include the impact of religion or other factors on ideas of the family, sex, and sexuality, understandings of the nature of gender differences, or conceptions of identity and authority in relationship to the gendered or genderless self or other. Likewise, identity might focus on its self-perception or ascription by others, its potential to be malleable, situational, or contested, or its various components, like ethnicity, political allegiance, religious affiliation, or class. Finally, authority might interrogate its attribution to or expectation for a particular person (e.g., an empress or saint), place (e.g., Rome), or thing (e.g., a text or creed), the mechanisms for its attainment or rejection, such as tradition, merit, or force, or its realization of lack thereof, either as an actual fact or ideal.

Abstracts (no more than 500 words) for papers presenting original scholarship should be submitted for consideration no later than October 1, 2024.

Publication – « St Peter of Osor (Island of Cres) and Benedictine monasticism in the Adriatic area », éd.

This book gathers the proceedings of the international round-table Saint-Pierre d’Osor et le monachisme bénédictin dans l’espace adriatique held in 2018 at Osor on the island of Cres (Croatia), which marked the culmination of twelve archaeological campaigns (2006-2017). The aim of this meeting was to present and contextualise, on a broad geographical and chronological scale, our knowledge of the monastery of St Peter and Benedictine monasticism in the Adriatic, whose importance in the reform of the Church in the 11th century was magnified by the Camaldolese Annals in the 18th century. This multi-disciplinary study of St Peter of Osor and its representations allows us to compare the available sources (archaeological, literary and archival) and to renew our understanding of the island monastery, its presumed foundation by Gaudentius, bishop of Osor and then monk at the Porto Novo monastery in Ancona, and its role in the implementation of the reform. It also sheds new light on Benedictine expansion, the spread of monastic culture, artistic transfers, the movement of people and networks of sociability between the shores of the Adriatic. Finally, it examines the dialogue between archaeology and history.

Publication – Fiona Fritz, « The Multifunctionality of a Medieval Hagiography. A historical case study of the « Gesta et Passio » and the making of the Danish royal Saint Cnut (c. 1100) »

The ‘Gesta et Passio’ is a Latin hagiographic text written around 1112 by Ælnoth of Canterbury about the Danish king Cnut who was killed in 1086 and later venerated as St Cnut.

Due to its textual complexity Ælnoth’s work has been considered heterogeneous and strangely structured. With her study Fiona Fritz aims to show that this complexity reflects the systematic multifunctionality of the text and that the text’s construction afforded Ælnoth the opportunity to express his perception of contemporaneous ecclesiastical and secular political matters. Relevant textual functions include the construction of Cnut as a royal saint, propagating the cult of St Cnut, furthering ecclesiastical interests, presenting an ideology of kingship, and enhancing the legitimacy of the ruling dynasty.

The analysis of the text considers both the historical context of its production and various textual moves and strategies employed by the author. Over and above the results attained in relation to the ‘Gesta et Passio’ as an individual text, the present study can be taken as a general exploration of methods for the analysis of the potential of hagiographical texts for various functions and for multifunctionality.

Publication – Veronika Pichaničová, « Precious Stones in Religious Objects. Use and Representation in the Early Medieval Latin West »

Precious stones have fascinated mankind for millennia. These glistening and colourful pieces of nature were centres of various legends and superstitions, used for healing and protection as well as signs of status and wealth. Since the dawn of Christianity, precious stones embarked on a journey where they were gradually cleansed from their Pagan past of being used as magical amulets and introduced into the world of Christian symbolism and allegory. They became ubiquitous on the most important sacred objects – from reliquaries and crosses to altars and ornate covers for the Holy Scriptures, they broadcasted the inner, spiritual value of these items through means that were easily understandable by everyone. Similarly, the visual prowess of precious stones was also utilized through mosaics or sparkling stained-glass windows, transforming entire sacred spaces into magnificent jewel-like visions of Heavenly Jerusalem. Whether real or represented in glass, precious stones were far more than mere decoration or a sign of profane wealth. As this book shows, at least for a moment they enabled medieval eyes to experience the vision of otherworldly beauty and preciousness, a true vision of the sacred.

Veronika Pichaničová is an assistant professor at the Department of Art History, Comenius University, Bratislava. Her research focuses on the usage of precious materials in medieval art in connection to medieval visuality and materiality.
