Die Tagung „DIVERSITAS (Sigis)MUNDI“ untersucht politische, soziale, religiöse und kulturelle Vielfalt in der Zeit Sigismunds von Luxemburg (1368–1437) und wird dafür in interdisziplinärer und vergleichender Perspektive „Diversität“ als eine Analysekategorie für die mittelalterliche Geschichte zur Diskussion stellen. Ziel ist es, Bedingungen und Kontexte von Diversität offenzulegen und darauf aufbauend das Spektrum zeitgenössischer Umgangsformen oder Bewältigungsstrategien zu analysieren.

Diversität gehört zu den großen gesellschaftlichen Themen unserer Zeit: Ob kulturell, religiös, sexuell, generationell oder biologisch – der Begriff ist in aktuellen Debatten omnipräsent. Auch in die historische Forschung haben der Begriff „Diversität“ und dazu entwickelte Konzeptualisierungsmodelle in den letzten Jahren Eingang gefunden (etwa bei Florin/Gutsche/Krentz 2018). Die Tagung setzt hier an und diskutiert, wie gesellschaftliche Differenzkategorien in der Vormoderne konstruiert und sichtbar bzw. wirksam zu werden vermochten. Als Untersuchungsrahmen dienen die von Sigismund von Luxemburg beherrschten Gebiete (das Heilige Römische Reich, Ungarn mit Kroatien sowie Böhmen) sowie die von ihm politisch maßgeblich beeinflussten Nachbarregionen (z.B. Polen-Litauen oder Österreich). In diesem Kontext haben sich immens reichhaltige und vielseitige Quellen erhalten, die einen tieferen Einblick in die Bedeutung und Geltendmachung von Differenzkategorien, in soziale Zugehörigkeiten, Gruppenidentitäten und Aushandlungsprozesse geben. Anhand ausgewählter Fallbeispiele aus verschiedenen Regionen Europas sollen politische, soziale, kulturelle und religiöse Vielfalt in ihrer Relevanz für soziale Aushandlungsprozesse historisch kontextualisiert und analysiert werden.

À la différence des comptabilités contemporaines, quelles qu’elles soient, secs alignements de chiffres que l’on a pu aisément informatiser, les documents comptables de la fin du Moyen Âge se limitent rarement à de simples « écritures » d’opérations mathématiques : si celles-ci sont bien présentes, elles se trouvent en fait insérées dans un cadre narratif aux vastes implications techniques, juridiques et politiques. L’objet de ce livre est d’analyser ce discours en posant les premiers jalons d’une typologie des formes comptables sur la longue durée.

De nombreuses études de cas sont ici présentées, entre péninsules Ibérique et Italienne, Flandres, Royaume de France, Provence, Dauphiné et terres germaniques, qui mettent à l’épreuve le postulat énoncé en introduction par lequel on propose de considérer les profonds bouleversements de la pratique comptable observables au tournant du XIIIe et du XIVe siècle comme l’une des premières manifestations de la « rupture de l’épistémè occidentale » chère à Michel Foucault.

Anne Lemonde est maître de conférences en histoire médiévale à l’université de Grenoble-Alpes. Ce volume s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme GEMMA (GEnèse Médiévale d’une Méthode Administrative) financé par l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR).

A collaborative investigation of one of the best-known works of late medieval European literature, the Franco-Burgundian collection of short stories known as the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Modelled loosely on Boccaccio’s Decameron and incorporating elements from Old French fabliaux as well as Poggio Bracciolini’s Liber Facetiarum, the anonymous collection attributes its morally challenging and frequently humorous tales to named narrators including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Louis of Luxembourg, Count of Saint Pol. 

The contribution of this new volume of essays is threefold: – empirical, in that it brings entirely new interdisciplinary insights into the study of the genesis and reception of the work; – methodological, in that it integrates study of the text within a 360-degree evaluation of the work’s manuscript and early printed context; and – conceptual, in that it seeks to understand the social dimensions of textual production and consumption.

These approaches unite ten principal contributions by specialists in the fields of art history, book history, court history and linguistics from France, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK.

Graeme Small is an historian of France and the Burgundian Low Countries in the late medieval and early modern periods.

Formation – Initiation à l’édition numérique (HTR et TEI)

Déroulement de chaque journée :

-9h-12h : présentation des outils et des questions de recherche (ouvert à tous)

-14h-17h : atelier pratique (nombre de participants limité, accès sur candidature)

Présentation :

Les “Humanités numériques”, c’est-à-dire l’utilisation des outils informatiques dans le champ des Humanités, sont en plein développement. Or, les Humanités numériques ne fournissent pas seulement de nouveaux outils de recherche : elles ouvrent de nouveaux champs et transforment les questions de recherche ; elles sont aussi au cœur de nombre des projets de recherche financés aujourd’hui.

Le domaine de l’étude des manuscrits et de l’édition critique est concerné. Durant ces journées, nous explorerons deux outils numériques utiles pour tous les chercheurs qui, d’une manière ou d’une autre, fréquentent les manuscrits et éditent des textes, quelle que soit leur discipline d’origine (antiquistes, médiévistes, théologiens…).

La première journée débutera par une introduction présentant l’ensemble du processus, depuis la lecture automatisée des manuscrits jusqu’à l’exploitation des données. Elle se centrera ensuite sur l’HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition), c’est-à-dire la reconnaissance des écritures manuscrites, grâce notamment à e-scriptorium.

La seconde journée abordera l’encodage des données textuelles en TEI (Text Encoding Initiative), en insistant spécialement sur l’importance scientifique du choix du schéma et des balises.

Ces journées ne nécessitent aucune compétence préalable : si vous êtes intéressés, mais que la présentation elle-même vous paraît obscure, elles sont faites pour vous !

Les présentations générales du matin sont ouvertes à tous. Pour des raisons pratiques, les ateliers de l’après-midi sont seulement accessibles sur inscription via candidature motivée (formulaire à compléter avant le 14 février ; la réponse sera donnée le 20 février au plus tard).

À destination de : Doctorants, Postdoctorants, Enseignants – Chercheurs, ainsi qu’aux étudiants de Master dont le projet de recherche est lié aux sujets abordés – Toutes universités confondues.

Carolingian culture has often been treated as an elite affair with little effect beyond a restricted circle close to the royal court. To do justice to the diversity of extant material, our traditional focal points need to be recontextualised. Many understudied manuscripts testify to a much wider circle of people, be it the anonymous schoolmaster who developed a better method of teaching Latin, the equally unnamed cleric who created new forms of liturgy, or all the people in monastic libraries who copied, reorganised, commented on and studied each other’s books. These anonymous figures were not passive recipients of royal prescriptions. They were active agents who helped shape and reshape the ideas and ideals of their world, and their texts and manuscripts should be studied side by side with those composed by well-known authors. In so doing, a much more dynamic and collaborative image of Carolingian culture emerges.

Publication – Valéria Tóth, « Personal Names in a Medieval Context »

The book studies general name theoretical questions and universal features of personal name giving and also provides a description of the personal name system of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The chapters on name theory introduce a cognitive-pragmatic model that is suitable for the characterization of the anthroponym system of any language in any of its historical eras. In the chapters discussing the features of old Hungarian personal name giving and usage we can find a specific application of the theoretical model. The medieval Carpathian Basin provides an excellent opportunity for such an analysis for several reasons. On the one hand because this region was at the crossroads of languages and cultures in the Middle Ages and this also clearly influenced its anthroponym systems. On the other hand, the time period under scrutiny, the Middle Ages (and more precisely the Old Hungarian Era between 895 and 1526) witnessed the restructuring of the name system on multiple levels, including the appearance and ensuing dominance of personal names of a Latin origin as a result of the country becoming a Christian nation and the emergence of family names as a new personal name category. The book also provides a detailed overview of the historical process in which personal name categories and personal name types were built and relied on one another.

Dieses Buch behandelt einerseits allgemeine namenstheoretische Fragen und universelle Charakteristika der Personennamengebung und Personennamenverwendung, andererseits bietet es eine Beschreibung des Personennamensystems des Ungarischen Königreichs im Mittelalter. In den namenstheoretischen Kapiteln wird ein kognitiv-pragmatisches Beschreibungsmodell vorgestellt, das für die Darstellung des Personennamensystems jedweder Sprache in all ihrer Epochen geeignet ist. In den weiteren Kapiteln zu den Besonderheiten der alten ungarischen Personennamengebung und Personennamenverwendung ist die konkrete Anwendung des Beschreibungsmodells zu finden. Das mittelalterliche Karpatenbecken bietet für eine solche Analyse ein ausgezeichnetes Untersuchungsfeld. Zum einen galt diese Region als Sammelstelle von Sprachen und Kulturen im Mittelalter, was natürlich auch in den Personennamensystemen seine Spur hinterlassen hat, zum anderen ist die untersuchte Epoche, das Mittelalter (genauer die sogenannte altungarische Zeit, 895–1526) als das Zeitalter zu betrachten, in dem die Restrukturierung des Namensystems auf mehreren Ebenen zu sehen ist: Die Erscheinung und das rasche Dominantwerden der Personennamen lateinischen Ursprungs als Ergebnis der Einbindung in den christlichen Kulturkreis ist als einer dieser Prozesse anzusehen, während die andere große Veränderung die Entstehung der Familiennamen als neuer Personennamentyp darstellt. Im Buch wird auch der historische Prozess der Aufeinanderschichtung der Personennamenkategorien und Personennamentypen detailliert vorgestellt.

È mai esistita un’ideologia imperiale connessa con la comunicazione linguistica nell’Europa del tardo Medio Evo e della prima modernità? E, in tal caso, all’esterno dell’impero germanico o bizantino, vi furono sovrani che tentarono di definire o imporre una “imperialità linguistica”? Attraverso l’esplorazione dal recupero in diversi contesti di una “sintassi” imperiale latina, greca o anche araba, questo volume offre un’indagine approfondita sulla gestione del multilinguismo negli spazi politici posti fuori o ai margini dell’Impero. Dalla Sicilia all’Inghilterra, dalla Polonia ai confini serbo-ungheresi, dal xii al xvii secolo, sono percorse le linee frastagliate dei complessi rapporti dialettici tra usi pragmatici e rappresentazioni ideologiche delle lingue che cooperano, sul lungo periodo, alla costruzione di suggestive forme di imperialità “derivata” o “seconda”.

The post holder will be a key researcher within the AHRC-funded project: ‘The Medieval Ritual Landscape’ (MeRit), led by Professor Roberta Gilchrist. The project aims to shed new light on everyday religion in the English Middle Ages (c.1000-1600 CE) by bringing together medieval public finds (recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, PAS) with excavated evidence.

The post holder will bring a strong understanding of later medieval archaeology and material culture, medieval beliefs and social identities. They will help shape research priorities, collect and analyse data, author reports for both academic and public audiences, contribute to conferences organised by the project, and support engagement activities with citizen scientists and academic partners.

MeRit is a collaborative project with Portable Antiquities Scheme (British Museum) and the PDRA will have a placement opportunity to work at the British Museum.

For more than a millennium, the exclamation « Benedicamus Domino » (‘Let us bless the Lord’) has sounded in song several times a day, with various liturgical and ritual functions. This two-day conference explores the history of the Benedicamus versicle, its musical and poetic embellishments, and its sacred, secular, and material contexts across the fullest extent of the versicle’s wide chronological and geographical span.

We invite papers that intersect specifically with the « Benedicamus Domino » or its broader or parallel frames of reference. Themes include but are not limited to:
– New sources, new centres
– Theological and liturgical perspectives
– Poetic elaboration and troping
– Ritual contexts (e.g. processions, comparable versicles)
– Unwritten traditions and their written traces
– Female communities
– Medievalism and carols
– Young singers and pedagogy
– ‘Simple’ polyphony
– Analytical case studies and approaches

Presentations may take the form of either a 20-minute individual paper or a 10-minute lightning paper (focused on a specific source or musical example). This is an English-language and in-person conference.
