Position Summary

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Medieval History, UCD School History, UCD College of Arts and Humanities.

The School of History, University College Dublin seeks to appoint a lecturer specialising in Medieval History (1000-1500). We particularly welcome applications from individuals whose interests span Britain & Europe. University College Dublin has a distinguished history in the field of Medieval Studies. The appointee will work as part of a team to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the field. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the promotion of medieval studies at UCD through a variety of means.

2013 Lecturer/ Assistant Professor (below the bar)_2010 Salary Scale: €31,820-€56,602 per annum

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and examining in medieval history.
  • Show a commitment to high quality research and scholarship in the field of medieval history
  • Supervise and mentor masters students if required to do so.
  • Engage in administrative duties as required by the School and College
  • Participate in School/College committees and boards
  • Undertake any other relevant duties as directed by the Head of School or nominee

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory

  • A PhD relevant to the field of medieval history c.1000 -c.1500 AD
  • A strong demonstrable commitment to research & international publication
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to deliver a Level Three Ten Credit module, “The Medieval Mind”, which concentrates on aspects of medieval culture according to the research interests of the successful candidate
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching

Desirable

  • Experience of lecturing undergraduate and post-graduate courses.
  • Experience of post-graduate supervision
  • Versatility in teaching off core research area in order to meet School curriculum and strategic needs
  • Commitment to raising the profile of the subject area
  • An engagement with innovative teaching practices
