Prof. Jan Dumolyn, HPIMS promoter, is looking for two PhD researchers in medieval studies.

Prof. Jan Dumolyn, an HPIMS promoter and staff member at Ghent University’s History Department, is looking for two PhD students (full time, 4 years).

1 position (full time, 4 years) within the Concerted Research Action project ‘High Tide – Low Tide. Bruges’ late-medieval harbour system as a maritime cultural landscape ‘ (PI’s: Wim De Clercq, Stephen Louweye and Jan Dumolyn). This interdisciplinary project is funded by the Special Research Fund of Ghent University. It combines archaeological, geological and historical research into the genesis and evolution of Bruges’ commercial landscape and harbour infrastructure.

The current position is for the historical part of the project, specifically on the import of bulk goods in medieval Flanders for the artisanal industry and food supply in the County’s urban centres.

Requirements: good knowledge of paleography, medieval archival documents, Middle Dutch, Middle French and Medieval Latin. Proficiency in English and at least a passive knowledge of modern French and German). Proficiency in historical research methodology.

1 position (full time, 4 years) for the FWO Fundamental Research Project ‘Litigation strategies and the law of commerce in later medieval Bruges’ (promoter: Jan Dumolyn, co-promoter: Dave De Ruysscher – Free University Brussels). The PhD student will specifically conduct research into late medieval commercial law in Bruges (urban and comital case law).

Requirements: good knowledge of paleography, medieval archival documents, Middle Dutch, Middle French and Medieval Latin. Proficiency in English and at least a passive knowledge of modern French and German). Proficiency in historical research methodology. Knowledge of medieval institutional or legal history is a plus.

For both positions candidates need to have obtained a MA degree in a relevant field of study. However, MA students on the verge of graduating can also apply. Apply by May 1st 2019, by sending a CV, motivation letter, copies of diplomas and annexes to Prof. Jan Dumolyn.
