Journée d’étude – Ritual, State and Lordship in Medieval England c.900-1300

In 1970, Richard Southern wrote that in England it was during the central Middle Ages that ‘government by ritual came to an end, and government by administration began’. Yet the last decade of research has shown that rituals and administrative government did not stand apart, but continued to co-exist under both the strong Anglo-Saxon state and its central medieval successor. The purpose of this conference is to explore the relationship between ritualised communication, the lordship of kings and magnates, and government in the context of the comparatively powerful structure of the English state. Key topics for discussion will be both how inspiration from early medieval and continental studies of rituals can advance studies of the English Middle Ages, and how study of the rituals of medieval England, with its rich source materials and particular social and political conditions, can contribute to the wider debate about ritualised communication in the medieval period.
The conference will take place on 16 July 2013 between 09h00 and 18h30. The conference is hosted by the New College of the Humanities but will be held in room LG6 of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on Keppel Street, right next to Senate House. Registration cost: £5 for students/£10 for salaried attendees, to be paid on the day. In order to register please email the organisers at RitualsConference@hotmail.co.uk no later than 7 July.

Appel à contribution – „Umbriferi prefazi“. Die Wiederentdeckung des Schattens in Mittelalter und Renaissance

Veranstalter: Prof. Dr. Franziska Meier (Göttingen); Dr. Björn Reich (HU Berlin); Christoph Schanze (Gießen)
Datum, Ort: 03.07.2014-05.07.2014, Göttingen, Lichtenberg-Kolleg
Deadline: 15.07.2013

Colloque international
Bibliothèque Apostolique du Vatican
Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales
Projet ANR MSFIMA (2011 BSH3 003 01)
Rome
12-13 Décembre 2013
Organisateurs :
Ibrahim Akel (INALCO, Paris)
Delio V. Proverbio (BAV, Rome)
Argument :

Colloque – Psalm culture & the politics of translation

Charterhouse Square, QMUL, London, 15-17 July 2013

The Psalms have been at the centre of English religious life, language and identity since the seventh century. This conference aims to bring together scholars working in different periods and disciplines to open up new avenues of discussion and debate. Psalm Culture and the Politics of Translation will feature keynote addresses and plenary panels featuring Daniel Anlezark (Sydney), Roger Bowers (Cambridge), Vincent Gillespie (Oxford), Hannibal Hamlin (Ohio State), Clare King’oo (University of Connecticut), Michael Kuczynski (Tulane), David Lawton (Washington University in St Louis), James Simpson (Harvard), Elizabeth Solopova (Oxford), Lynn Staley (Colgate University), Eric Stanley (Oxford), Annie Sutherland (Oxford) and Elaine Treharne (Stanford) as well as over forty further papers from leading and emerging scholars within this field. Planned session cover a range of different subjects from the Paris Psalter to the Sidney Psalter, responses to the Psalms in Anglo-Saxon England to Anglo-Scottish Psalters in the Civil War period, visual culture and literary form. The structure of the conference – each day of which will open with a plenary panel and close with a double-feature keynote address – will challenge participants to reappraise and redefine a field that has, until now, remained fragmented.

In addition to keynote, plenary and panel sessions on the Psalms from Anglo-Saxon England until the English Civil War, the conference will feature a presentation led by Beth Quitsland (Ohio) and Nicholas Temperley (Illinois) that will encourage audience members to experience the Psalms as they might have been sung in early Elizabethan England and a roundtable discussion led by the acclaimed composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad that will form the starting point for a commission for a new setting of one or more Psalms. Scholars of all levels working on any aspect of religious culture in the medieval and early modern periods are invited to attend and take part in this event.
This conference is generously supported by the School of English and Drama, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London, by the Society for Renaissance Studies and St Peter’s College, Oxford.
Registration is now open. Any questions can be directed to the conference organizers, Dr Ruth Ahnert (QMUL), Dr Tamara Atkin (QMUL), and Dr Francis Leneghan (Oxford) at the conference email address (psalmculture@gmail.com).

Appel à contribution – Civic Artists and Court Artists (1300-1600). Case Studies and Conceptual Ideas about the Status, Tasks and the Working Conditions of Artists and Artisans

This conference aims at investigating the role of the Early Modern artist/ artisan in different social environments, especially the court and the city, the princely household and the guild system. Many artists/ artisans attracted commissions from both camps such as Jean Fouquet, Rogier van der Weyden, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Plock, Jacques Jordaens and Bernard van Orley, to name only a few. Some artists held an honorary title and were thus only loosely attached to the court.
The proposed conference will equally address historiographical questions such as to the changing perception and evaluation of the artistic milieu under discussion. At this point in time, it seems pertinent to take a critical look at the central hypothesis in Martin Warnke’s 1985/1996 monograph Hofkünstler. Zur Vorgeschichte desmodernen Künstlers / The Court Artist. On the Ancestry of the Modern Artist [1993]. This study argues that early modern artists could only develop fresh ideas and new modes of expression in the context of the court due to the privileges they enjoyed from the 13th/14th centuries onwards. The corporate guild system is understood as a body exerting restrictive measures that stifled artistic creativity and artistic freedom. In the light of research undertaken over the last 30 years, the question arises whether it is still appropriate to divide the world of artistic production into two distinct parts: the court environment and the civic environment.

The following points are relevant for discussion, further suggestions are welcome :
  • By which parameters do we define the role of the court artists ? Which media were represented by court artists and which terminology was developed in order to describe their professional profile (e.g. : jeweler, painter, illuminator, (« tapissier », embroiderer, sculptor, architect, « gardejoyaux », « varlet de chamber », etc.) ?
  • How did artists/ artisans negotiate their position within the courtly household ? What mattered to them most (e.g. : annual/daily pay, freedom from guild regulations, free choice of residence) ?
  • Why did some cities such as Brussels, Leuven or Nuremberg temporarily appoint an official painter or architect and what was their primary role and/or function ?
  • Does the status of the artist have an impact onto the individual works of art? Is it possible to distinguish art works that were made for the court from those that were produced within the guild system? Is the notion of « court art » linked to the status of the artist or is it an independent construct based on ideas of patronage?
  • Did court artists have more artistic freedom than guild members? Did court artists have more room to experiment and introduce new topics and styles?
  • How was the interrelationship between social status and creative output interpreted in art historical discourse (Warnke, Antal, etc.) and in how far do these hypotheses stand up to archival research?
  • What do we know about the itinerant artist, moving from one city to another or from one court to another? Which mechanisms were in place to guarantee new employment far away from home (e.g.: letters of recommendation, trial piece, etc.)?

The time frame covered by this project is the late Medieval and Early Modern period ranging from c. 1300 to 1600. The conference concentrates on the former Holy Roman Empire, France and the Netherlands, but may also extend to other geographical areas.
