Publication – Francesco Guidi-Bruscoli, « Italian Merchant Bankers in North-Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages »

Italian merchants played a pivotal role in the international trade of England and the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages. While the field is well established, the examination of a vast array of Italian business sources kept in private and public archives offers important new insights.

The ten studies in this volume (two published in English for the first time) reveal previously unknown sources. These are used to examine the role and activity of Italians in London and Bruges. Most of the volume is devoted to the Italian communities in England, many of whom were merchants. They are discussed not only for the role they played in English foreign trade but also for their model of settlement, their relationship with the local population and for the institutions they established. Given the near absence of surviving English business records prior to 1500, this book also provides valuable material for those interested in English mercantile activity. Many indigenous merchants feature in the financial accounts of Italian banks.

Italian Merchant Bankers in North-Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages will be of value to economic historians of England and the Low Countries, and, more broadly, to students and scholars interested in late medieval trade and finance.

Francesco Guidi-Bruscoli is Associate Professor of Economic History at the University of Florence, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Visiting Reader at Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of four books and of more than sixty academic articles on various aspects of the economic history of the Renaissance. In the UK, he has been a member, in various capacities, of research projects at Queen Mary University of London, the University of Bristol and the University of York. His previous publications includes Papal Banking in Renaissance Rome (2007).

Publication – « Coins and Money in the Middle Ages. Studies in Honor of Alan Stahl », éd. Merle Eisenberg, Lee Mordechai, David Yoon

Alan Stahl’s distinguished career in numismatics has ranged over numerous topics in the study of coins, monetary history, and medallic art, from antiquity through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. This volume brings together cutting-edge scholarship from three overlapping groups of scholars to honor him: former students from the American Numismatic Society Graduate Summer Seminar whom Stahl taught during the 1980s and 1990s, colleagues and former students at Princeton University where he has taught since 2005, and collaborators in the Framing the Late Antique and Early Medieval Economy research project he has directed since 2014. The broad scope of the articles reveals how widely Stahl has influenced numismatics and numismatists over the last five decades, through his research, teaching, and training of generations of students. Some articles focus on specific aspects of coinage, but far more show how thinking with coins, as a medium, transforms how scholars write the histories of the monetary world, economic life, and social relations. Like Stahl himself, the volume’s contributors go beyond technical numismatic details and place coins and money in a broader framework that helps transform our understanding of how people lived in the premodern world.

Appel à contribution – Féminicide (« traverse » Zeitschrift für Geschichte. Revue d’histoire 1/2028)

Diana H. Russell, une participante à cet événement, a ensuite coécrit avec Jill Radford l’ouvrage fondateur Femicide : The Politics of Woman Killing (1992).

Publication – « Power, Patronage, and Production. Book Arts from Central Europe (ca. 800–1500) in American Collections », éd. Jeffrey F. Hamburger, Beatrice Kitzinger, Joshua O’Driscoll

The arts of the book from central Europe often provide a mirror both for imperial aspirations as well as for the complex pluralities of societies on the ground. The essays in this collection explore material written in Czech, German, Hebrew, and Latin, made for both religious and non-religious contexts in the ninth, twelfth, and fifteenth centuries, highlighting the range and depth of the Central European corpus as well as how integral such material has been to the formation of medieval holdings in America.
