Exposition – Cantate Domino: Music in the Lambeth Palace Library collections

This inaugural exhibition for the Library’s new exhibition room celebrates musical treasures held in Lambeth Palace Library, placing better-known holdings alongside lesser-known volumes and fragments from the collections.

The exhibition features the Arundel Choirbook (one of the most important records of Tudor polyphonic music); Sion College’s illuminated York Breviary from the 15th century; and sermon notes pertinent to the composition of the hymn “Amazing Grace” (celebrating its 250th anniversary this year). These are displayed alongside numerous other beautiful and interesting examples of music in the Library’s collections found in a variety of forms and spanning the 11th to 20th centuries.

This free exhibition will be open from 23 June to 18 September 2023. In addition, a concert (including private view of the exhibition) will be held in conjunction with the exhibition on 11 July. The annual Friends of Lambeth Palace Library Lecture, to be delivered by Professor Magnus Williamson on 23 June, will also complement the exhibition.

Il gusto per i soffitti lignei dipinti costituisce un fenomeno che interessò soprattutto l’Europa meridionale dal Medioevo centrale al Rinascimento, rappresentando – pur se declinato secondo modalità strutturali ed esornative differenti – un elemento caratteristico e unificante. Anche se tali manufatti sono depositari di molteplici informazioni sulla cultura del tempo e costituiscono spesso l’unica cifra capace di tramandarci il decoro degli interni, solo recentemente sono divenuti oggetto di un sempre crescente interesse.

Inserito nell’ambito di un percorso di ricerca in seno al Dipartimento di Studi umanistici e del patrimonio culturale (DIUM) dell’Università di Udine, il convegno ha riunito studiosi provenienti da Croazia, Francia, Germania, Italia, Portogallo, Spagna, Svizzera e, oltre ad affrontare aspetti strettamente scientifici, ha voluto stimolare l’interesse per questa espressione artistica in parte ancora a rischio di dispersione e di distruzione, tuttora poco nota a un pubblico non specialistico e soltanto parzialmente valorizzata.

Maurizio d’Arcano Grattoni è docente di Storia della produzione artigianale e della cultura materiale nel Medioevo e di Storia delle arti applicate presso il Dipartimento di Studi umanistici e del patrimonio culturale dell’Università degli Studi di Udine. I principali settori di ricerca riguardano l’architettura residenziale e gli arredi fra basso Medioevo e primo Rinascimento. Autore di studi e saggi su tali argomenti, per quanto riguarda i soffitti lignei ha curato la mostra Tabulæ pictæ (2013).

Francesco Fratta de Tomas è dottore di ricerca in Storia dell’arte. Si è occupato in particolare di soffitti lignei dipinti e di arredi a intaglio piatto di area norditaliana del XV e XVI secolo, temi che ha sviluppato nel corso di assegni di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Studi umanistici e del patrimonio culturale dell’Università degli Studi di Udine. Ha pubblicato saggi concernenti l’architettura residenziale e le arti applicate, fra cui il volume Soffitti lignei in Friuli fra Medioevo e Rinascimento (2019).

Entrambi fanno parte di gruppi di ricerca nazionali e internazionali, fra cui LOC-GLOB. The local connectivity in an age of global intensification (1280-1500), nell’ambito del quale sono impegnati nello studio degli interni in Friuli attraverso gli inventaria bonorum di XV secolo.

Colloque – La poésie politique dans les littératures européennes du XIIe au XVe siècle

L’Institut d’Études Médiévales de l’Université de Fribourg (Suisse) organise tous les deux ans un colloque interdisciplinaire réunissant des chercheurs et des spécialistes autour d’un thème relatif à la culture médiévale. Le prochain colloque aura lieu en septembre 2023 sur le thème „La poésie politique dans les littératures européennes du XIIe au XVe siècle“.

Examinant quels sujets sont dignes d’être traités en langue vernaculaire illustre par les poètes les plus excellents, au début du deuxième livre du „De vulgari eloquentia“, Dante identifie trois sujets principaux (magnalia): salus videlicet, venus et virtus (II ii 8), à savoir la prouesse des armes (armorum probitas), la passion de l’amour (amoris accensio) et la rectitude de la volonté (directio voluntatis). Cette liste sélective – poésie de guerre, poésie amoureuse, poésie morale – exclut donc, entre autres, le genre de la poésie politique, pourtant très cultivé dans l’Italie communale de Dante. La raison de cette exclusion réside probablement dans le fait que, aux yeux du poète florentin, la poésie politique apparaît comme un genre hybride, que ce soit parce que des considérations morales, civiles et militaires s’y côtoient, ou parce que les poèmes politiques se présentent parfois comme des chansons d’amour fictif ou métaphorique, et donc comme une variante ou un sous-genre mineur de la lyrique érotique. Pour Dante, les magnalia doivent être traités par les meilleurs poètes dans leur forme pure ou dans leurs conséquences pures et directes (Dve II iv 9); en revanche, dans la poésie politique fait irruption la dimension du contingent et de l’accidentel. Plus encore, le contingent et l’accidentel constituent l’espace même de la poésie politique, qui se caractérise par le fait d’être occasionnelle, liée à des événements historiques précis, sectaire et visant un but pratique (exhorter, persuader, promouvoir, diffamer).

Les considérations du „De vulgari eloquentia“ sur les trois magnalia ne sont pas forcément compatibles avec d’autres traditions littéraires que la poésie lyrique italienne; elles permettent cependant de circonscrire et de définir le domaine de la poésie politique dans son ensemble. Sur cette base, le prochain colloque fribourgeois entend explorer l’existence d’une tradition européenne de poésie politique, en rassemblant et en confrontant des spécialistes de poésie médiévale issue de différentes traditions linguistiques, dans une région située idéalement entre l’Islande et le Caucase. La période examinée sera comprise entre le XIIe siècle et la première moitié du XVe siècle. A côté des langues vernaculaires, les langues sacrées et/ou impériales (latin, grec, arabe, hébreu) seront également prises en considération.

Quel est le statut de la poésie politique dans une tradition spécifique ou dans un groupe de traditions apparentées? Sous quelles formes ce genre de poésie s’exprime-t-il (formes métriques, mise en texte, mise en page)? Qui en sont les auteurs, et pour quel public? Quels sont les modes de transmission des textes? Dialoguent-ils avec des images? Et aussi, autour de quels événements historiques les poèmes politiques fleurissent-ils? Quel est le niveau de conscience rhétorique, juridique, philosophique ou théologique des auteurs? Peut-on détecter des thèmes et des débats translinguistiques et/ou transnationaux? Peut-on parler, dans certains cas, de propagande politique en vers? Le colloque tentera d’apporter des réponses à ces questions et à d’autres, dans le but de poser quelques jalons pour commencer à esquisser une image globale de la poésie politique européenne entre le Moyen-Âge central et le Moyen Âge tardif.

Les Actes du colloque seront publiés dans la collection „Scrinium Friburgense“ auprès de la maison d’édition Reichert Verlag (Wiesbaden).

Appel à contribution – Ascesis, silence and flight. Experiences of the abandonment of the world in the Fathers of the Church

The sharp opposition brandished in the Gospel of John about the antagonism between Jesus and the world provoked intense reflections about the place of believers in the current political and economic order. The call to the mission and the conversion of the people demanded that the Fathers of the Church ask themselves about the most appropriate ways of living, witnessing and transmitting the Good News without being contaminated by the rhythm and customs of Greco-Roman society. Although marriage and family life enjoyed high esteem among the churches, fleeing into the desert, sexual renunciation, fasting, and an austere life emerged as expressions of profound piety, but also of discontent and prophylaxis towards a society that was sometimes hostile and, after the triumph of Constantine (as Peter Brown says), not Christian enough.


These VIII Conference on Patristic Studies are intended to recover, analyze and debate the various expressions of renouncing the world proposed by the writers of Patristics based on the understanding of the particular social, economic and theological situations that occurred in Classical Antiquity, Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

We therefore call on the different disciplines of the broad field of philosophical, theological, historical, linguistic and artistic studies to share their contributions according to these coordinates:
– History of monasticism
– Writings of the fathers and mothers of the desert
– Exegesis in monastic movements
– Theology of abandonment of the world
– Fasting and almsgiving as practices promoted by monks
– Art and iconography
– Monasticism, ecclesial politics and secular politics

Our lives are saturated with images. They exert an unparalleled power in contemporary culture. However, the power of images is in fact nothing new. Although texts are often the most important historical sources for academics, the image played an enormous role for those who actually lived in these past societies. Images communicated all manner of concepts and messages to a much wider audience than theological texts. Throughout history, images frequently depicted God, human beings, and their relationship in a manner that was meant to teach theology and inspire awe. Historically speaking, most people who have done theological reflection have done so in intimate conversation with the images seen in sacred spaces.

This volume explores how images themselves are theology, how they influence sacred texts and theological concepts in a way that words cannot on their own. In part one, the book presents five essays investigating the ways in which images have shaped sacred and theological texts. In part two, the book offers five discussions of the sort of theological work that images can perform that words are unable to do. The volume concludes by outlining areas for future research and exploration based on the insights achieved among the chapters. The collection is, in its totality, a celebration of how central the image has been in shaping theology and how it should continue to do so.

Dr C. A. Strine is Lecturer in Ancient Near Eastern History and Literature at the Univerity of Sheffield. He is the author of the award-winning monograph Sworn Enemies and Director of the Back Where You Came From project, reading biblical stories about migration and making art with sanctuary seekers.

Mark McInroy is Associate Professor of Theology at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota). He is the author of Balthasar on the Spiritual Senses: Perceiving Splendour (OUP, 2014), for which he received a Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise in 2015.

Alexis Torrance is Archbishop Demetrios College Chair of Byzantine Theology. He is the author of Repentance in Late Antiquity: Eastern Asceticism and the Framing of the Christian Life, ca. 400–650, for which he received a Manfred Lautenschläger Award for Theological Promise in 2015.

Colloque – Facing the Other: How Crusades changed societies and mentalities

Die Kreuzzüge sind nicht nur ein Ereignis, die Begegnung der Kreuzfahrer mit den Einheimischen hat auch die Sicht auf die jeweils anderen verändert. Schließlich hat sich die kreuzfahrende Gesellschaft auch selbst verändert. Die Vorträge werden diese Fragen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchten, aus der Sicht slawischer und griechischer Christen, tartarischer, türkischer und syrischer Muslime und aus dem Blickwinkel von Geschichtswissenschaft, Byzantinistik, Osmanistik und Slawistik.

Publication – Ulrich Eisenhardt, « Kaiserliche Gerichtsprivilegien. Ihre Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Rechtspflege im Alten Reich »

Ulrich Eisenhardt wertet die Quellen zur Rechtsprechung der obersten Gerichte im Alten Reich zu den Gerichtsprivilegien aus und gelangt dabei zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Gerichtsverfassung des Reiches seit dem Mittelalter von den Gerichtsprivilegien, die der König bzw. Kaiser verlieh, geprägt war, ohne dass es eine nennenswerte Gesetzgebung gegeben hätte. Mit Hilfe der Gerichtsprivilegien versuchte man, Gerichtszuständigkeiten für die Rechtsuchenden in Regeln zu fassen, die den Zugang zu den erstinstanzlichen Gerichten und später auch die Appellationsmöglichkeiten bestimmten. Auch die Abgrenzung zwischen weltlicher und geistlicher Gerichtsbarkeit spielte dabei eine bedeutende Rolle. Erst in einem sich in der neueren Zeit verstärkenden Prozess verdrängten Gesetze die Privilegien, nachdem lange Zeit ein Nebeneinander von gesetzlichen Bestimmungen und Privilegien als Rechtsquellen bei gleichem Regelungsinhalt geherrscht hatte. Nicht zu unterschätzen ist der Beitrag, den die Gerichtsprivilegien zur Territorialisierung des Gerichtswesens und damit zur Ausbildung föderalistischer Strukturen geleistet haben.

Le vocable « Moyen Âge » a été inventé à la Renaissance pour désigner un âge supposé sombre, coincé entre deux périodes brillantes. Aujourd’hui, le regard sur le Moyen Âge est plus contrasté mais les stéréotypes sont tenaces. Dans la bande dessinée, cette période a régulièrement été instrumentalisée à des fins de politisation des jeunes lecteurs un peu partout en Europe.

Laurent Huguenin-Elie s’est rendu à la dernière édition des rendez-vous de l’Histoire à Blois pour rencontrer Tristan Martine, maître de conférences en histoire médiévale et spécialiste de la bande dessinée.

Publication – Shannon McSheffrey et Ad Putter, « The Dutch Hatmakers of Late Medieval and Tudor London. With an edition of their bilingual Guild Ordinances »

At the end of the Middle Ages, a group of hatmakers from the Low Countries migrated across the North Sea to London. These men brought with them new skills and technologies, unknown to English artisans, becoming the first to manufacture brimmed felts hats in England. However, though their wares were immediately popular with English consumers, from courtiers to ordinary people, they faced an economic environment in London that restricted and sometimes completely disallowed the production and retail of their goods. In the early years of the sixteenth century, the hatmakers’ desire to remain independent from regulation and governance by London civic guilds led to their formation of a craft association of their own. The Hatmakers’ fraternity of St James operated for about a decade, until in 1511 the royal council mandated their amalgamation with and subordination to the powerful London Haberdashers’ Company. In their short period of independence, the Hatmakers’ guild wrote bilingual ordinances, in English and Dutch, regulating the craft of hatmaking in London. The small parchment booklet in which they wrote the ordinances, now housed in the London Guildhall Library, contains more than a simple list of craft rules: it reveals how these Dutch craftsmen negotiated their immigrant lives in both the specifics of their artisanal practice and the broader social and linguistic realities of their daily interactions.

Shannon McSheffrey is Professor of History at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. She has written five books and numerous articles and chapters on aspects of English society, culture, and politics between 1400 and 1550. She is currently at work on the Evil May Day anti-immigrant riot in London in 1517.

Ad Putter is Professor of Medieval English at the University of Bristol, UK, co-director of Bristol’s Centre for Medieval Studies, and Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author and editor of numerous books, with a particular interest in Medieval Romance texts and the works of the Gawain poet. He is currently leading a research project on the literary heritage of Anglo-Dutch relations.
