L'Agenda des Médiévistes

Ce titre est le premier d’une nouvelle collection des Éditions du patrimoine : « Mémoire morcelée » ; chaque titre dresse le bilan de la recherche archéologique dans une région française, du paléolithique au XX^e siècle. Sites et objets remarquables y sont étudiés et reproduits. La collection s’adresse aux professionnels, aux amateurs et aux curieux. Plusieurs niveaux de lecture y sont proposés, afin de toucher le plus large lectorat possible. L’archéologie fait rêver le grand public et c’est l’un des objectifs de cette collection que d’être le vecteur de ce rêve. De sorte que, si le propos est rigoureusement scientifique, le style et la forme y sont aussi séduisants qu’accessibles.

Avec ce premier titre, 150 ans d’archéologie en Île-de-France, c’est tout un pan méconnu de l’histoire de cette région qui est ressuscité. Au fil du sommaire, seront présentés les époques paléolithique, néolithique et chalcolithique, l’âge du bronze, l’âge du fer, l’époque gallo-romaine, le Haut Moyen Âge, le Moyen Âge avec les exemples de Paris et de Saint-Denis, et enfin la période moderne.

Christian Landes est conservateur en chef du patrimoine honoraire. Il a également été l’administrateur des sites archéologiques de Montcaret et Montmaurin dont il a écrit les « Itinéraires ».

Bertrand Triboulot est un archéologue français du ministère de la Culture, diplômé de l’École pratique des hautes études (EPHE). Son domaine de spécialité est la protohistoire et plus précisément le premier âge du fer (Hallstatt). Il a travaillé en Allemagne et en Suisse, mais surtout dans l’est et le sud de la France. Aujourd’hui, cet ingénieur d’études exerce les fonctions de responsable territorial du département des Yvelines au sein de la DRAC d’Île-de-France – Service régional de l’archéologie. Il est également chercheur associé au CNRS. Il concourt au développement des nouvelles technologies en archéologie (LIDAR, photogrammétrie, réalité augmentée, tomographie, etc.).

How did citizens in Bruges create a home? What did an ordinary domestic interior look like in the sixteenth century? And more importantly: how does one study the domestic culture of bygone times by analysing documents such as probate inventories? These questions seem straightforward, yet few endeavours are more challenging than reconstructing a sixteenth-century domestic reality from written sources. This book takes full advantage of the inventory as a source and convincingly frames household objects in their original context of use. Meticulously connecting objects, people and domestic spaces, the book introduces the reader to the rich material world of Bruges citizens in the Renaissance, their sensory engagement, their religious practice, the daily activities of men and women, and other social factors. By weaving insights from material culture studies with urban history, At Home in Renaissance Bruges offers an appealing and holistic mixture of in-depth socio-economic, cultural and material analysis. In its approach the book goes beyond heavy-handed theories and stereotypes about the exquisite taste of aristocratic elites, focusing instead on the domestic materiality of Bruges’ middling groups. Inventing the Alphabet provides the first account of two-and-a-half millennia of scholarship on the alphabet. Drawing on decades of research, Johanna Drucker dives into sometimes obscure and esoteric references, dispelling myths and identifying a pantheon of little-known scholars who contributed to our modern understandings of the alphabet, one of the most important inventions in human history.

Beginning with Biblical tales and accounts from antiquity, Drucker traces the transmission of ancient Greek thinking about the alphabet’s origin and debates about how Moses learned to read. The book moves through the centuries, finishing with contemporary concepts of the letters in alpha-numeric code used for global communication systems. Along the way, we learn about magical and angelic alphabets, antique inscriptions on coins and artifacts, and the comparative tables of scripts that continue through the development of modern fields of archaeology and paleography.

This is the first book to chronicle the story of the intellectual history through which the alphabet has been “invented” as an object of scholarship.

Der feste Glaube des mittelalterlichen Menschen an die reale Anwesenheit des Göttlichen in seiner alltäglichen Lebenswelt stellt eine grundlegende soziale Tatsache dar. Aber war diese Überzeugung nur vom reinen Glauben gesteuert, oder verfolgte sie nicht vielleicht durchaus auch strategische Ziele?

In der neusten Untersuchung von Gerd Althoff geht es denn auch genau um diese Frage: um den Interpretationsspielraum, den die Vorstellungswelt vom Eingreifen transzendenter Mächte den mittelalterlichen Zeitgenossen ließ. Au Moyen Âge, les Français vivaient pour beaucoup loin de France. Du XIIe au XVe siècle, dispersés «depuis l’Arabie jusqu’à l’Irlande», c’est principalement hors du territoire de notre pays, à Dublin, Londres, dans les États latins d’Orient issus des croisades ou dans le Péloponnèse qu’ils prirent conscience d’une identité commune. Durant ces siècles, le plus ancien manuscrit de la Chanson de Roland, qui évoque la « douce France », fut rédigé en Angleterre. On entendait chanter en français dans les rues de Jérusalem. On bâtissait, à Chypre, de sublimes cathédrales gothiques, sœurs de celles de Paris et d’Amiens. Et c’est dans les régions francophones du Saint Empire romain germanique que l’usage du français se répandit précocement dans les écrits pratiques.

Être Français n’avait alors rien à voir avec l’occupation d’un territoire ou la soumission à un pouvoir politique. La France était là où l’on avait le sentiment de faire partie d’une communauté de langue, dont découlait une culture, une vision partagée de l’homme et de la vie en société.

Dans cet essai iconoclaste, Thierry Dutour invite à se défaire des préjugés qui nous présentent le passé à travers le prisme déformant des idées d’aujourd’hui. Avec un postulat renversant : avant le lien à une terre, avant l’État, il y avait les Français, sans souci de frontières.
