La prochaine réunion des Ymagiers sera virtuelle*. Elle aura lieu le vendredi 9 avril 2021, à 16 h. Nous aurons le plaisir d’écouter Michel Pastoureau : « Du père au mari et retour. Les armoiries des femmes au Moyen Âge ».

Les armoiries des femmes n’ont guère suscité l’intérêt des médiévistes, ni chez les héraldistes ni chez les historiens. Même la mode des gender studies les a oubliées. Elles nous ont pourtant été conservées en grand nombre, non seulement sur des milliers de sceaux, mais aussi sur des pierres tombales, des vitraux, des tapisseries, des livres manuscrits, des panneaux peints, des pièces d’émaillerie et d’orfèvrerie. Les identifier fournit à l’étude de ces objets d’importants éléments de datation, de localisation, de commande ou d’attribution, et permet parfois de reconstituer des collections ou des bibliothèques dispersées. Malheureusement il s’agit là d’un exercice difficile, les armoiries des femmes mariées n’étant pas toujours reconnues comme telles mais souvent prises à tort pour les armoiries d’un couple. Par là même, bien des identifications et des catalogues sont à revoir. A la fin du Moyen Âge, les femmes commanditaires, destinataires, bibliophiles ou collectionneuses sont plus nombreuses qu’on ne le croit généralement.

À l’aide d’exemples variés, la conférence tentera de faire le point sur ces différentes questions et proposera quelques voies où pourraient s’engager les recherches à venir.

Michel Pastoureau est historien, spécialiste du bestiaire, des couleurs, des armoiries et des symboles. Directeur d’études émérite de l’École pratique des hautes études, président d’honneur de la Société française d’héraldique et de sigillographie, il est l’auteur d’une soixantaine d’ouvrages. Le plus récent, Jaune. Histoire d’une couleur (Seuil, 2019) a reçu le prix Montaigne 2020.

Du 14 au 16 avril 2021 aura lieu, à Genève, le colloque international « L’auteur dans ses livres : autorité et matérialité dans les littératures romanes du Moyen Âge (XIIIe–XVe siècles) » organisé par les Universités de Genève et de Fribourg (par Luca Barbieri, Yasmina Foehr-Janssens, Roberto Leporatti, Caterina Menichetti et Marion Uhlig) se propose d’aborder la ‹ question de l’auteur › dans les littératures romanes du Moyen Âge en relation avec la matérialité des recueils manuscrits. Les approches critiques et méthodologiques au sein des études relatives à chacune de ces littératures ont, elles aussi, été multiples.

Offre d’emploi — Assistant Professor in History of Art, Architecture, and Landscape (University fo Groningen)

The candidate:

• has a basic understanding of the three distinct yet interconnected domains of the Department
• has practical and theoretical expertise in cultural heritage studies
• is enthusiastic about the specific qualities of the three domains
• is willing to participate in the different research centres the Department participates in, i.e. Arts in Society, Expertise Center Architecture, Urbanism and Health (a joint venture of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, and the University Medical Center of Groningen), Center for Landscape Studies
• shares the philosophy underlying the ambitions to optimise interaction and cross fertilisation between these domains
• is willing to teach bachelor courses of the curriculum, in all three domains
• has in-depth knowledge of the art, architectural and landscape history of Europe, from the Middle Ages until the present time
• knows the professional vocabulary of in these fields in English and Dutch
• is willing to work with professionals from other Departments and Faculties, notably the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (which shares the responsibility for a joint minor programme), and the participants in the Expertise Center Architecture, Urbanism and Health: the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, and the University Medical Center of Groningen
• has reached the requirements of the University Teaching Qualification (BKO), or is willing to meet these requirements within two years.

The candidate will work in research, teaching (undergraduate and graduate courses, thesis advising), the preparing and accompanying excursions in the Netherlands and abroad, assistance in grant proposal writing, relevant administrative tasks. Education will comprise approximately 60% of the time.

Requirements

• PhD in the field of art history, architectural and urban history and/or landscape history
• strong research profile and publication record appropriate to career stage
• record of high-quality teaching appropriate to career stage
• willingness to apply for relevant research grants
• some experience with administrative duties and/or departmental service and/or professional service is welcomed
• demonstrably good command of the English language (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking)
• expected to have or gain understanding of the Dutch language (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking) within two years.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 60 months. We offer in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

– a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,746 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,826 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
– a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income, 8.3% year-end bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees; favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants
– a contract combining 60% teaching tasks with 40% research-time. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for 5 years.

Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts is a large, dynamic faculty in the heart of the city of Groningen. It has more than 5.000 students and 700 staff members, who are working at the frontiers of knowledge every day. The Faculty offers a wide range of degree programmes: 16 Bachelor’s programmes and over 40 Master’s tracks. Our research, which is internationally widely acclaimed, covers the following fields: Archaeology, Cultural Studies, History, International Relations, Journalism, Language and Literary Studies, and Linguistics.

The Department of History of Art, Architecture & Landscape in Groningen is unique because it combines the study of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and the history of landscapes, and examines the relationships between artwork, city and landscape. Characteristic for the approach of the art history section is that it transcends the traditional lines of division between different periods and, while acknowledging the efficacy of chronological series in teaching, stresses the common features of works of art as material objects. Specific for the architectural and urban history section is that it positions classical, object based history and theory as the basis for addressing contemporary issues, notably in cultural heritage and issues related to the health impacts of architecture, urbanism and public health. Typical for the landscape section is the interaction between designed landscapes (country estates, gardens, parks, land art etc.) and the geological and archaeological features of landscapes.

To what extent are the dead truly dead? In medieval society, corpses were assigned special functions and meanings in several different ways. They were still present in the daily life of the family of the deceased, and could even play active roles in the life of the community. Taking the materiality of death as a point of departure, this book comprehensively examines the conservation, burial and destruction of the corpse in its specific historical context. A complex and ambivalent treatment of the dead body emerges, one which necessarily confronts established modern perspectives on death. New scientific methods have enabled archaeologists to understand the remains of the dead as valuable source material. This book contextualizes the resulting insights for the first time in an interdisciplinary framework, considering their place in the broader picture drawn by the written sources of this period, ranging from canon law and hagiography to medieval literature and historiography. It soon becomes obvious that the dead body is more than a physical object, since its existence only becomes relevant in the cultural setting it is perceived in. In analogy to the findings for the living body in gender studies, the corpse too, can best be understood as constructed. Ultimately, the dead body is shaped by society, i.e. the living. This book examines the mechanisms by which this cultural construction of the body took place in medieval Europe. The result is a fascinating story that leads deep into medieval theories and social practices, into the discourses of the time and the daily life experiences during this epoch.

In Corpus Catalogorum Belgii. The Medieval Booklists of the Southern Low Countries all the existing medieval documents about libraries and book collections in Belgium have been edited, together with a complete repertory of the surviving books and manuscripts. The 7 volumes appeared between 1994 and 2016; each volume has an index of authors and works and an index of places and first names of persons. The present supplementary volume provides in three sections corrections and additions as well as two indices: an index of the c. 4500 manuscripts and incunables recorded in the series and presently kept in libraries all over the world, and an index of the c. 2000 last names of medieval persons mentioned.

Publication — Emmanuel Johans, « Les Armagnacs et le Rouergue: L’ascension d’une dynastie princière 1274-1418 »

En 1304, le comte d’Armagnac acquiert le comté de Rodez, ce qui crée une principauté à la fois gasconne et rouergate. Au temps de la Guerre de Cent ans, les Armagnacs renforcent leurs liens avec leurs vassaux du Rouergue et développent un gouvernement qui prend une forme étatique à la fin du XIVe siècle. Ils contrôlent les fiefs, baronnies et seigneuries, et administrent par un réseau de châtellenies comtales. La puissance princière elle-même soumise au roi entretient des relations particulières avec les pouvoirs locaux, la noblesse, le clergé et la bourgeoisie marchande. Elle trouve en Rouergue des serviteurs spécialistes du droit, des finances et de la guerre. Sur ce socle, en 1415, Bernard VII en tant que connétable accède à la tête du royaume.

La pierre de construction est dotée d’une riche histoire. Utilisé depuis l’Antiquité, ce matériau noble et solide a connu un renouveau ces trente dernières années grâce aux nouvelles techniques d’extraction et de taille. Animals in the Middle Ages have often been discussed – but usually only as a source of food, as beasts of burden, or as aids for hunters. This book takes a completely different angle, showing that they were also beloved domestic companions to their human owners, whether they were dogs, cats, monkeys, squirrels, and parrots. It offers a full survey of pets and pet-keeping: from how they were acquired, kept, fed, exercised, and displayed, to the problems they could cause. It also examines the representation of pets and their owners in art and literature; the many charming illustrations offer further evidence for the bonds between humans and their pets, then as now. A wide range of sources, including chronicles, letters, sermons and poems, are used in what is both an authoritative and entertaining account.

Dr KATHLEEN WALKER-MEIKLE gained her PhD at University College London.

Publication — Haude Morvan, « Sous les pas des frères ». Les sépultures de papes et de cardinaux chez les Mendiants au XIIIe siècle

Ce livre aborde l’art funéraire du XIIIe siècle par un biais original. Il s’intéresse à la manière dont les Frères Prêcheurs et Mineurs ont traité les sépultures de papes et de cardinaux dans leur discours, à la fois littéraire et monumental, entre 1250 et 1304. L’analyse des tombes de prélats situées dans des églises mendiantes, réparties entre l’Italie et la France, révèle une intervention des frères dans les choix d’emplacement, de forme et d’iconographie. Il ressort ainsi de l’enquête que les Frères Prêcheurs ont eu une politique de leur espace davantage planifiée que les Frères Mineurs, puisqu’ils n’acceptèrent dans le chœur de leurs églises que les sépultures de prélats appartenant à l’ordre, surmontées d’une plate-tombe. De leur côté, les Frères Mineurs ont construit un discours original sur leur rôle dans l’accompagnement des mourants, à la fois dans l’iconographie et dans la littérature homilétique. Enfin, ce livre accorde une place importante aux procédés mis en œuvre par les mendiants pour « créer » des saints parmi les prélats qui étaient issus de l’ordre ou qui en étaient des bienfaiteurs.


Haude Morvan est une ancienne membre de l’École française de Rome. Depuis 2016, elle occupe les fonctions de maître de conférences en histoire de l’art médiéval à l’université Bordeaux Montaigne, et est rattachée à l’Institut Ausonius. Ses travaux portent notamment sur l’art funéraire de la fin du Moyen Âge et sur les ordres mendiants.
