The Queen’s College and the Faculty of History are seeking to recruit an Associate Professor or Professor of Medieval History, with a Tutorial Fellowship, to start from 1 October 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a permanent position after an initial probation. It is an open-rank position and is open to recently completed PhDs, or to those who will have submitted their dissertation for examination by the closing date, as well as to more senior scholars.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
Candidates should have experience of conducting research in the history of the British Isles in the early middle ages; research interests in Iceland, the Scandinavian and/or Celtic worlds would also be welcome. The appointee will be expected to play a leading role in teaching the History of the British Isles, c. 400-1100, but the post is open to historians working in any field within these temporal and geographical limits. It may be an advantage to have interests that complement our existing strengths in social, political and ecclesiastical history.
In making this appointment, the College and the University share the goal of developing and strengthening the teaching and research capacities and capabilities of both the College and the History Faculty in this field. Medieval History has long held a distinctive place in the History Faculty at Oxford, and there is a strong and steady demand for teaching in this area partly as a consequence of the requirement that all History undergraduates have to take at least one paper out of the pre-1400 papers.
As a Tutorial Fellow of The Queen’s College the successful candidate will share responsibility for the provision of History teaching to students at the College, they will share in the admission and pastoral care of students studying for degrees involving History, and they will contribute to the good running and general oversight of the College as a member of the Governing Body.
Salary and Allowances
Combined University and College salary: £48,114 to £64,605 per annum, plus substantial additional benefits including a housing allowance of £14,198 p.a. An additional allowance of £2,804 p.a. would be made upon award of the title of Professor. The post also provides access to joint equity scheme or housing loan or the right to occupy housing owned by the College, a College research allowance of £3,130 p.a., access to private medical insurance scheme, and an allowance for additional guidance and welfare responsibilities to students of £3,182 p.a. after the first year in post.
Place of Work
The College will provide a non-residential study/office on the main site in central Oxford. The post also carries full membership of the College’s Senior Common Room with the right to lunch and dine free of charge.
