Les hôtes de marque pénètrent dans la majestueuse salle à coupole du palais de la Magnaure. L’empereur byzantin les reçoit, assis sur un trône d’or, couronné de pierreries, chaussé de pourpre et richement vêtu. Derrière lui, semblent rugir des lions dorés. Le maître de l’Orient est entouré de sa cour.

Le Xe siècle marque assurément l’apogée de l’empire romain d’Orient qui perdura un millénaire, à l’époque même où l’Occident vivait ce que les hommes de la Renaissance ont appelé le Moyen Âge. Témoin de ce siècle et de ses hommes, l’empereur Constantin VII Porphyrogénète (913-959), nous a laissé un document exceptionnel : le Livre des Cérémonies. Cet ouvrage unique brosse le tableau des fastes de la cour impériale, à cette époque la première puissance de la chrétienté. Michel Kaplan nous ouvre les portes de ce monde quelque peu irréel et nimbé de gloire, où brillent l’or et la pourpre. Il nous rend accessible la description des cérémonies, de l’idéologie politique de l’Empereur devenu lieutenant de Dieu sur terre, des courtisans, avant tout des fonctionnaires civils et militaires, animant ce pouvoir, mais aussi de la vie quotidienne du palais impérial comme de la capitale, la légendaire et remuante Constantinople.

Michel Kaplan, professeur émérite d’Histoire Byzantine à l’Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), est l’auteur notamment de Byzance (2007, Guides Belles Lettres des Civilisations) et Pourquoi Byzance ? Un empire de onze siècles (2015), prix Diane Potier-Boès 2017 de l’Académie française.

his volume presents recent archaeological research on the agriculture and society of al-Andalus during the Middle Ages, especially from the perspective of ‘hydraulic archaeology’ — an avenue of research developed by Spanish researchers which focuses on the analysis of irrigation systems created by Islamic colonists from the eighth century onwards. More recently, this research perspective has incorporated the analysis of other agricultural systems, such as dryland agriculture and pasturelands. All of these agricultural regimes are complementary in peasant-led subsistence agricultural systems. From a methodological perspective, this archaeological approach is highly innovative, and uses a wide range of techniques (aerial photography, cartographical analysis, field survey, archival research, and archaeological excavation) in order to outline the size and boundaries of cultivation and grazing areas, to define specific plots of land and the related road networks, and to identify other associated facilities, such as watermills.

In connection with these topics, several issues are discussed: the earmarking of rural or urban farming areas for irrigation, draining, or dryland agriculture; the process of construction and the subsequent evolution of these farming areas; the transformations undergone by these areas after the feudal conquest; and, finally, the identification of pasturelands and the analysis of the evidence concerning their management.
