To promote a flexible workforce, the University will consider applications from individuals seeking full time, part time, job share, or term time only working arrangements.

The project, which has been running in Aberystwyth since 2003, is a comprehensive revision of the Anglo-Norman Dictionary (London: MHRA, 1977- 1992; = AND#l),to produce an online, freely-accessible dictionary (AND#2): http://www.anglo-norman.net). The current AHRC grant (2017-2021) centres on the revision of the R-S entries.

AND#2 radically expands the coverage of medieval French into non-literary domains and thus presents a much more comprehensive picture of medieval language than many traditional, literature-based dictionaries. It is a vital part of the exploration of Britain in the Middle Ages, and a British counterpart to important research projects in France and Germany which are concerned with linguistic variation, dialectology, language contact, and non-literary language. Collectively, these projects will transform our understanding of the history of this period of French. The project also works closely together with the Oxford English Dictionary, the Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources and the Middle English Dictionary, mapping the multilingual reality of medieval British society.

The posts thus represent an opportunity to become part of a well-established project that contributes to exciting international developments in medieval French scholarship, English language history and medieval culture.

PDRAs engaged on this project will need a Ph.D. in a relevant subject (such as medieval French, English or History) and (ideally) a high level of computer literacy.

Appel à contribution – Old Books and New Technologies: Medieval Books and the Digital Humanities in the Low Countries

Over the course of the Middle Ages, what was called the Low Countries developed an original written culture. It is known to us through sources in Latin, in Middle Dutch and in Old and Middle French. At first centred in the Benedictine and Cistercian abbeys of Egmond and Friesland in the North or the Dunes, Ghent and the closely connected chain of Lobbes – Gembloux – Liège in the South, it increasingly became a town phenomenon following the development of the largest and most dense urban conglomeration in the European Middle Ages both with large towns like Ghent, Bruges, Tournai, Liège, Brussels, Antwerp, Leuven, ‘s- Hertogenbosch, Utrecht and a series of smaller cities scattered over the area, all with their convents, and, consequently, books. In the 15th century, the production of luxury manuscripts for the Burgundian court and its environment flourished in Bruges, Ghent, Oudenaarde, Brussels and Tournai, which gave rise to the development of an important pictorial culture. At the same time, the presence of towns, cathedrals and chapters all over the area gave rise to the rise of the famous French-Flemish school of polyphony, the works of which often have come down to us in beautifully executed manuscripts. The urban character of the region in the later Middle Ages was essential in the development and expansion of such phenomena as the Devotio moderna or early Humanism. When the latter was essential in the spread of Latin schools and the amount of 15th-century editions of classical Latin authors in the IJssel region, the first found its expression in a proper network of convents and libraries, which is highlighted by the ‘Red Cloister Register’, the famous collective catalogue compiled in the early sixteenth century. All this produced an important heritage of medieval books, manuscripts and incunabula as well as the sources for their history up to the eighteenth century (old library inventories, pre-modern bio- bibliographical sources, accounts of literary journeys, etc.).

The essential part of what has been preserved of this important heritage has fortunately survived in the libraries and manuscript collections of our regions. Over the last few years, important survey and recovery projects have been started in what has become the Benelux: CICweb.be for the French-speaking institutions of Wallonia and Brussels, Medieval Manuscripts in Dutch Collections (mmdc.nl).

for the Kingdom of The Netherlands and Medieval Manuscripts in Flemish Collections for Flanders2. However, not all the heritage collections have been identified or explored, especially in the private and ecclesiastical libraries. Moreover, not all the pre-modern sources useful for the study of this written heritage have yet been identified, surveyed or edited.

To facilitate these scholarly activities, we must call on information technologies and particularly on digital humanities for inventory, research, preservation and enhancement of this heritage. Relevant technologies include managing metadata, digitisation, electronic editions, data mining, virtual libraries and virtual digital museology or digitally restoring medieval books. Initiatives, such as the Sanderus electronicus, the electronic edition of the Bibliotheca Belgica Manuscripta3 project, have already been underway for years. However, all these initiatives have not yet necessarily been surveyed, and they are still not all accessible from a central point of information. Moreover, many manuscripts and the relevant sources that document their history are still poorly known to scholars working in this field. It therefore seems timely and opportune to make an assessment of the initiatives and to establish a research community around the written heritage of the historical Low Countries and the application of digital humanities to this field. An ‘observatory of written heritage’, comparable to Biblissima4 and in close collaboration with this pioneering French portal in the field, would be a good approach to creating a synergy between keepers of the historical collections, expert librarians, academic teachers and written heritage conservators.

On 29 and 30 October 2020, KBR / Royal Library of Belgium, in partnership with the Campus Condorcet of Paris, the National Library of Luxembourg, the KB national library of the Netherlands, the universities of Ghent, Leuven, Liège, Mons and Namur, and the Vlaamse Erfgoedbibliotheken, will be holding an international conference dedicated to these questions. It will bring together representatives from libraries, museums, archives with researchers interested in the ‘medieval book and new technologies’. Proposals for 20-minutes papers and half day workshops (demo of an IT application) are invited that cover any of the following topics : report on initiatives and experiences, new projects of exploration, surveying, publishing and studying these collections and sources. Particular emphasis will be placed on the methodological dimension of the use of digital humanities, being sure to include the bias and risks that come with these new techniques. The historical perspective will remain the main focus, as digital humanities should help reformulate research issues, not replace them.
Working languages will be English, Dutch, and French.

Les cryptes médiévales constituent un patrimoine chargé de mystère dont la variété et les questions qu’elles suscitent restent méconnues. Trente chercheurs apportent leur contribution à la connaissance des cryptes de deux régions.

L’Île-de-France et la Picardie présentent un corpus multiforme de cryptes, de l’époque carolingienne au XVe siècle, et des plus connues comme Saint-Denis, Jouarre ou Saint-Médard de Soissons, aux plus secrètes. Une approche pluridisciplinaire en aborde tous les aspects, tant sur le plan architectural que sur celui de l’utilisation liturgique, ou sur leur rôle dans la dévotion aux corps saints, dont un chapitre fait l’inventaire. Une analyse historique et archéologique renouvelée lève bien des interrogations. Une partie est consacrée à des structures situées sous des églises, mais qui ne sont pas des cryptes : des critères précis permettent de mettre fin aux confusions. Un inventaire des cryptes existantes, disparues ou rejetées clôt l’ouvrage.

Publication – Tom Johnson, « Law in Common. Legal Cultures in Late-Medieval England »

There were tens of thousands of different local law-courts in late-medieval England, providing the most common forums for the working out of disputes and the making of decisions about local governance. While historians have long studied these institutions, there have been very few attempts to understand this complex institutional form of ‘legal pluralism’.

Law in Common provides a way of understanding this complexity by drawing out broader patterns of legal engagement. Tom Johnson first explores four ‘local legal cultures’ – in the countryside, in forests, in towns and cities, and in the maritime world- that grew up around legal institutions, landscapes, and forms of socio-economic practice in these places, and produced distinctive senses of law.

Johnson then turns to examine ‘common legalities’, widespread forms of social practice that emerge across these different localities, through which people aimed to invoke the power of law. Through studies of the physical landscape, the production of legitimate knowledge, the emergence of English as a legal vernacular, and the proliferation of legal documents, the volume offers a new way to understand how common people engaged with law in the course of their everyday lives.

Drawing on a huge body of archival research from the plenitude of different local institutions, Law in Common offers a new social history of law that aims to explain how common people negotiated the transformational changes of the long fifteenth century with, and through legality.

Tom Johnson grew up in Ipswich. He completed degrees at Cambridge and Oxford, and his doctoral work at Birkbeck, University of London. He held a junior research fellowship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, before joining the University of York as a Lecturer in Late Medieval History. In 2018-2019, he was a Fellow at The Davis Center for Historical Studies at Princeton University.

Le présent volume propose d’étudier un trait paradoxal de la vie monastique, celui de la mobilité des moines pourtant astreints par diverses règles et contraintes, depuis les origines, à la clôture et à la stabilitas loci. Durant un long Moyen Âge, allant du IVe au XVe siècle, les mouvements de circulation, d’échanges et d’influences monastiques forment en effet une réalité bien concrète, qui répond à des besoins essentiels de la vie des moines, économiques, administratifs, intellectuels ou religieux. Le phénomène étant pluriel, il convenait ici de le contextualiser et de l’historiciser, pour mieux saisir, dans chaque cas examiné, la tension pouvant naître de la notion même de voyage pour celui qui, par sa vocation, renonce a priori à tout dépaysement hors celui que lui offre son cloître. L’examen de différentes circulations pose alors en creux la question de la mobilité – condamnée, tolérée ou encouragée – comme facteur non pas secondaire mais essentiel dans la définition et la construction du fait monastique en Orient comme en Occident.

Ce volume contient 23 contributions présentées lors de deux rencontres scientifiques tenues à l’École française de Rome en 2014 et à l’université de Vienne en 2016, dans le cadre d’un programme intitulé Les moines autour de la Méditerranée. Contacts, échanges, influences entre Orient et Occident, de l’Antiquité tardive au Moyen Âge (IVe-XVe siècle).

Olivier Delouis, ancien membre de l’École française d’Athènes, est chargé de recherche au CNRS (UMR 8167 Orient et Méditerranée, Paris). Spécialiste du monachisme byzantin, il dirige la Revue des études byzantines.

Maria Mossakowska-Gaubert, ancien membre à titre étranger de l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale au Caire, est chercheur à l’université de Copenhague (Saxo Institute, Actions Marie Skłodowska-Curie). Elle mène des recherches sur le monachisme en Égypte byzantine.

Annick Peters-Custot, professeure d’histoire du Moyen Âge à l’université de Nantes, est spécialiste de l’Italie méridionale byzantine, normande et souabe et du monachisme byzantin en Italie.

Atelier – Enfermements IV: travail et milieux clos

À travers une approche comparée des relations entre enfermements et travail invitant au dialogue entre historiens, archéologues, sociologues et juristes et prenant en compte la longue durée (du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine), les ateliers de 2020 exploreront les manières dont les milieux clos (monastères, hôpitaux et prisons, en particulier) ont conçu et organisé le travail en leur sein, que l’oisiveté soit tenue pour un vice à combattre par l’enfermement, que le travail contribue à l’économie des milieux clos, qu’il soit un outil de « disciplinarisation » ou que la clôture apparaisse comme une contrainte efficace sur les employés récalcitrant, notamment. Quelles sont les spécificités du travail en situation d’enfermement ? Quels effets la clôture produit-elle sur l’organisation du travail ? À l’inverse, quels sont les effets du travail sur les structures d’enfermement et en quoi le travail les modifie-t-il ? Comment la structure close se projette-t-elle ou se dilate-t-elle, par le travail, au-delà des murs ?

This volume brings together a series of case studies of spatial configurations of power among the early medieval societies of Europe. The geographical range extends from Ireland to Kosovo and from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean world and brings together quite different scholarly traditions in a focussed enquiry into the character of places of power from the end of the Roman period into the central middle ages. The book’s strength lies in the basis that it provides for a comparative analysis of the formation, function and range of power relations in early medieval societies. The editors’ introductory chapter provides an extended scene setting review of the current state of knowledge in the field of early medieval social complexity and sets out an agenda for future work in this topical area. The regional and local case studies found in the volume, most of them interdisciplinary, showcase detailed studies of particular situations at a range of scales. While much previous work tends to focus on comparisons with the classical world, this volume emphasises the uniqueness of early medieval modes of social organisation and the need to assess these societies on their own terms.

Publication – Amaury Chauou, « Les Plantagenêts et leur cour (1154-1216) »

Richard l’invincible, l’ignoble prince Jean, la belle Aliénor… Au Moyen Âge, des confins de l’Écosse au royaume latin de Jérusalem, le nom des Plantagenêts résonne dans tout l’Occident.

Comment les Plantagenêts, issus du modeste lignage des comtes d’Anjou, ont-ils atteint une telle renommée ? Sur plus d’un demi-siècle, jusqu’en 1216, leur « empire », formé de territoires aussi divers qu’immenses, est au cœur des affrontements politiques, militaires et religieux de leur temps. Rois chevaliers, ils ont su cultiver les arts et les lettres, et leur cour jouit d’un rayonnement sans pareil. Leur construction politique transmanche reste cependant précaire : le jeu des alliances, les armes et l’argent ne l’empêchent pas d’entrer en crise.

L’essentiel est cependant ailleurs : les Plantagenêts ont associé leur nom à un mode de gouvernance et à un style de cour qui feront date. Leur saga, qui a tant inspiré chroniqueurs et troubadours, fascine encore aujourd’hui.

Docteur en histoire médiévale, Amaury Chauou est professeur en classes préparatoires littéraires (lycée Chateaubriand, Rennes). Il est également membre associé du laboratoire Tempora et chargé de cours aux universités de Rennes 2 et de Bretagne-Occidentale. Il a notamment publié L’idéologie Plantagenêt (PUR, 2001) et Le roi Arthur (Seuil, 2009).

Journées de l’Ecole Doctorale 558 « Histoire, Patrimoine, Mémoire, Langage »

L’école doctorale « Histoire, Mémoire, Patrimoine, Langage », née en 2012 de la fusion d’une partie des ED 350 (Rouen) et 68 (Caen-Le Havre), regroupe 13 unités de recherche et 400 doctorants de disciplines variées : histoire, archéologie, philosophie, épistémologie, lettres modernes, arts du spectacle, langues, littératures et civilisations étrangères, linguistique ou encore sciences du langage. Forte de cette pluridisciplinarité, l’ED 558, placée sous la direction d’Alexandra Merle (ERLIS), propose cette année deux journées d’échange – qui se tiendront à Caen et à Rouen – afin de réunir ses jeunes chercheurs autour de la thématique “Sources et archives”.

Ces journées s’offrent comme un espace de réflexion et de discussion dans lequel les jeunes chercheurs en SHS sont invités à interroger les méthodologies de recherche qu’ils emploient à l’heure de recueillir et d’exploiter leurs sources. Étapes indispensables de la démarche scientifique, aussi exaltantes que frustrantes, la collecte et l’exploitation des données constituent un défi face auquel s’élaborent de nombreuses stratégies. La pluralité des disciplines susmentionnées promet un riche dialogue méthodologique qui permettra de confronter les freins et leviers spécifiques à chacune et de mettre en évidence des points de convergence.

L’objectif est de créer un rendez-vous annuel pérenne pour promouvoir les avancées de l’ED et cultiver les contacts entre ses différentes unités de recherche, ainsi qu’avec des ED partenaires. Cet appel à communications s’adresse donc aux jeunes chercheurs de l’ED 558 (du master au post-doctorat) mais aussi à des membres d’autres ED ayant été confronté à l’étude des méthodologies de la recherche en SHS.

Quelle typologie traditionnelle de sources est propre à chaque discipline ? Comment les différentes disciplines travaillent-elles leur documentation ? Selon les spécificités inhérentes à chaque discipline, quel est le rapport individuel du jeune chercheur à l’archive et à la source ?

Sources primaires et sources secondaires: une négociation constante

En quoi les catégories de sources primaires et sources secondaires peuvent-elles se recouper et, dans le cadre d’une abondance de sources, que privilégier ? Quel regard critique impliquent-elles respectivement et quelles difficultés posent-elles ? En quoi une source a priori secondaire peut-elle devenir un objet d’étude à elle seule ? Comment identifier et définir les différents types de sources ?

Entre absence et abondance de sources : situations disciplinaires et points de vue comparés sur sources éditées et inédites

En fonction des disciplines et des périodes d’étude, quels problèmes surgissent à l’heure d’identifier, puis d’exploiter les sources (sources lacunaires, abondance d’informations, …) ? Quelles solutions peuvent alors être envisagées ? Quelle posture adopter face à l’inédit ? Comment penser nouvellement un objet d’étude abondamment traité par la recherche ? Comment aborder un sujet totalement nouveau du point de vue des sources à traiter ? Quels sont les problèmes inhérents à la datation des sources et à leur pérennité, notamment dans le cas de sources orales et de sources numériques impliquant des enjeux de stockage des données ?

Interdisciplinarité et spécificité des sources : croiser les expertises pour s’approprier un corpus

Comment envisager l’interdisciplinarité en tant que nouvelle modalité privilégiée dans le travail de recherche ? Comment permet-elle d’élargir les types de sources et les méthodes lors de la collecte des données et de l’exploitation de ces données ? Quels avantages fournit l’interdisciplinarité ? Quels écueils faut-il éviter ? Comment un jeune chercheur peut emprunter une ou des démarches en dehors de sa discipline, créant ainsi une interdisciplinarité propre à nourrir son approche individuelle mais aussi la méthodologie de sa propre discipline ?

Échecs et succès d’accès aux sources : accéder et rendre accessible les sources

Quels accès aux sources se présentent aux jeunes chercheurs en SHS à l’heure actuelle ? Quelles problématiques d’exploitation et de publication soulève la consultation de sources issues d’archives privées ? Des sources consultables de façon matérielle aux sources en ligne, quelles différences méthodologiques entraîne la diversité des supports ? Comment appréhender le libre-accès aux sources et utiliser des plate-formes comme HAL ? Comment s’approprier et utiliser efficacement les bibliothèques en ligne ou les sites de récolement de sources ? Comment les jeunes chercheurs en SHS peuvent-ils exploiter les nouveaux outils bibliographiques pour communiquer leurs sources de façon normée et faciliter leur consultation ?

Démarches de jeunes chercheurs en SHS : des questions aux sources ou des sources aux questions ?

Comment une réflexion autour de “sources et archives” permet-elle d’envisager la distance entre le chercheur et son sujet de recherche, notamment dans le contexte d’une dématérialisation croissante des contenus ? En quoi le rapport aux sources et aux archives façonne-t-il la réflexion scientifique et méthodologique des jeunes chercheurs actuels ? Quelle place occupent les sources dans le parcours du chercheur, et comment accommoder la réflexion avec le moment de découverte – attendue ou non – des sources ?

Types et formats des communications

Chaque intervenant disposera de 20 minutes d’exposé oral pour sa communication. Les propositions de communication doivent être soumises au format PDF avant le 10 février 2020 sous la forme d’un texte de présentation de la communication de 2000 signes (espaces inclus). Il sera accompagné d’une présentation personnelle de 300 signes (espaces inclus) où seront indiqués nom et prénom, unité de recherche et école doctorale de rattachement (département pour les étudiants de master), fonctions assurées au sein de celles-ci ainsi que le ou les axes thématiques auxquels se rapporte la communication proposée dans le cadre des journées “Sources et archives”.

De divisie Onderzoek- en Onderwijsdiensten van de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden (UBL) zoekt een

Hoofdconservator, tevens conservator Westerse Gedrukte Werken

De werkzaamheden
Bent u een goede leidinggevende en heeft u brede kennis van wetenschap en cultuur? Heeft u een duidelijke visie hoe documentair erfgoed op een innovatieve wijze benut kan worden in de hedendaagse onderzoek- en onderwijspraktijk? Heeft u expertise op het gebied van de geschiedenis van het gedrukte boek en weet u deze in te zetten voor cultureel ondernemerschap? Dan heeft de UBL een uitdagende baan voor u. De UBL zoekt een hoofdconservator die leiding geeft aan de afdeling Conservatoren Bijzondere Collecties en die tevens verantwoordelijk is voor de rijke collectie Westerse Gedrukte Werken van de UBL. De werkzaamheden bestaan uit:

Direct leiding geven aan de afdeling Conservatoren Bijzondere Collecties, waar een tiental conservatoren werkzaam is;

Ontwikkelen en implementeren van beleid en projecten om de bijzondere collecties van de UBL zo goed mogelijk te benutten in de onderzoek- en onderwijspraktijk;
Kansen zoeken en herkennen voor cultureel ondernemerschap en het vergroten van het publieksbereik van onze bijzondere collecties;
Onderhouden van een breed intern en extern relatienetwerk op het gebied van bijzondere collecties in het algemeen en het gedrukte boek in het bijzonder;
Fondsenwerving ten behoeve van aankoop en digitalisering van bijzondere collecties;
Beheren en uitbreiden van de collectie Westerse Gedrukte Werken d.m.v. aankoop en verwerven van schenkingen;
Vergroten van de mogelijkheden om de collectie Westerse Gedrukte Werken vindbaar en bruikbaar te maken;
Begeleiden van conservering en restauratie, en van bruikleenaanvragen;
Bijdragen leveren aan tentoonstellingen, publicaties, conferenties, studiedagen en colleges.

Profiel

Afgeronde wo-opleiding met focus op een cultuurhistorisch onderwerp;
Minimaal 5 jaar ervaring in leidinggeven;
Goede kijk op innovatieve ontwikkelingen rond (de digitalisering van) wetenschappelijk- en cultureel erfgoed;
Kennis van de actuele ontwikkelingen in wetenschappelijke informatievoorziening in relatie tot bijzondere collecties;
Ervaring met fondsenwerving;
Ruime ervaring met beheer en ontsluiting van erfgoedcollecties;
Vertrouwdheid met bedrijfs- en informatiesystemen in de bibliotheeksector;
Uitstekende uitdrukkingsvaardigheid in zowel de Nederlandse als de Engelse taal; kennis van Latijn is een pre.
Compententies: sturen op resultaat, verbindend leiderschap, organisatiesensitiviteit, overtuigingskracht, kostenbewust handelen, communicatief, samenwerkingsgericht.
Bij indiensttreding is het overleggen van een verklaring omtrent gedrag vereist.

Wij bieden

Het dienstverband wordt aangegaan conform de cao Nederlandse Universiteiten, in eerste instantie voor de duur van een jaar, met bij goed functioneren uitzicht op verlenging. Daarna behoort bij goed functioneren en gelijkblijvende omstandigheden een dienstverband voor onbepaalde tijd tot de mogelijkheden. Het salaris bedraagt, afhankelijk van opleiding en werkervaring, minimaal € 4.406,- en maximaal € 5.656,- bruto per maand bij een fulltime dienstverband (schaal 12).

Daarnaast kent de Universiteit Leiden goede arbeidsvoorwaarden. Zo is er sprake van een eindejaarsuitkering (8,3%), vakantietoeslag (8%) en de mogelijkheid om via een keuzemodel arbeidsvoorwaarden op maat te kiezen. Meer informatie kunt u nalezen op de website.
