Dans la longue histoire de la fable, d’Ésope et Phèdre à La Fontaine, le Romulus de Nilant occupe une place unique. Probablement composé pour les écoles de la Renaissance carolingienne, ce recueil de fables latines est le meilleur représentant d’une tradition qui servit de socle à l’éducation pendant tout le Moyen Âge. Son auteur s’est inspiré des récits frustes qui subsistaient à la fin de l’Antiquité pour composer un recueil dans une langue aussi classique qu’élégante. Son but : fournir à ses élèves un manuel de latin mais également d’initiation à la rhétorique.

Sous sa plume sont rassemblés aussi bien des classiques du genre comme Le corbeau et le renard que d’autres apologues tout aussi connus, qu’ils traitent de politique, fassent l’éloge de la liberté ou prennent des formes incongrues (L’homme enceint). Sa réussite se mesure à son influence : le Romulus de Nilant a été lui-même maintes fois imité et a notamment servi à la première mise en français du genre dans les Fables de Marie de France.

Offre d’emploi – Lectureship in Medieval History (Oriel College, University of Oxford)

Oriel College seeks to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Medieval History (1000-1500) for one year from 1st September 2020 to 31st August 2021 to cover research leave. Candidates should hold or be near to completing a doctorate in a relevant field of Medieval History and should be able to demonstrate relevant teaching experience.

The person appointed will be expected to undertake teaching for an average of 8 contact hours per week during term time to undergraduates. The Lecturer must be able to teach: Approaches to History (a first-year paper taught in tutorials, offering at least two of the following options: Anthropology & History, Archaeology & History, Art & History, Economics & History, Gender & History, Sociology & History), Disciplines of History (a second-year paper in historiography and comparative history, co-taught in classes), European and World History 1000-1300 (a first-year paper taught in tutorials), History of the British Isles 1000-1330 (a first- or second-year paper taught in tutorials) and History of the British Isles 1330-1550 (a first- or second-year paper taught in tutorials).

In addition, the person appointed will be required to offer tutorials in accordance with their interests and experience, in the second-year papers in European and World History, from among the following options: The Central Middle Ages, 900-1300, The Late Medieval World, 1300-1525 and The Global Middle Ages, 500-1500.

The Lecturer will assist with general administration, the pastoral care of undergraduates, and admissions interviews in early December.

The basic stipend will be according to the Senior Tutors’ Committee recommended scale for full-time stipendiary lecturers with a teaching stint of 8 hours per week (calculated on a pro rata basis – currently £18,341 to £20,628 per annum, depending on experience). Contributory membership of USS (the Universities Superannuation Scheme) is also offered. The Lecturer will be entitled to free lunch and dinner in the Senior Common Room. Following on from the great success of the first ‘Making Your Mark: The National Symposium for the Study of Historic Graffiti’ at the University of Southampton in 2019, we are delighted to announce that the 2020 conference will be taking place at the University of York on 3rd October with a day of sessions, and the opportunity to discuss findings and experiences with all of those currently engaged in the field of historic graffiti.

Ever since the term ‘graffiti’ was first used by archaeologists in the middle of the 19th century, generations of historians and archaeologists have been interested in researching historic graffiti inscriptions. In the last few decades, there has been an increased interest in these marks, and how they can evidence daily experiences from the past. Graffiti opens up the potential for exploring many different themes, beliefs, and stories, with almost immeasurable scope for practically anyone with an active interest in history, people, and anthropology.

Much of the enormous growth in the level of interest surrounding the study of historic graffiti has been down to pioneering community-based archaeology projects, which in turn have been supported by national organisations such as English Heritage, the Council for British Archaeology, and the National Trust. This has led to a far greater understanding and appreciation of graffiti as a resource which crosses many disciplines, and has also drawn the attention of the wider public. The aim of the symposium is to bring together all of those involved in the recording, research, and interpretation of historic graffiti, for the benefit of all who participate.

Call for papers: We are now calling for papers from anyone who wishes to make a contribution, regardless of their background. All submissions will be considered on merit, to ensure that graffiti remains a truly inclusive and welcoming field for all. The symposium hopes to address and explore a variety of themes and topics relating to the study of historic graffiti of all periods, as well as providing an opportunity to share experiences and insights. In addition, we invite you to submit your own ideas for presentation. Submissions should be a written abstract of no more than 200 words, with an aim to present for 20 minutes.

Poster Submissions: We also welcome submissions for a poster presentations. There will be an opportunity to view poster presentations throughout the symposium. A poster submission should focus upon the theme of historic graffiti, and can be highlighting the outcomes of a project, exploring a single survey site, or address the wider research issues associated with the subject, or any aspect of historic graffiti. Posters should be a maximum size of : A0 (841 x 1188 mm) and in portrait format. Please submit your poster proposal via the Call for Papers email address.

Bourse – Allocations de recherche de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres pour des séjours de recherche d’un an à l’École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem

Deux allocations de recherche au titre de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres sont proposées pour un séjour d’un an à l’École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem (EBAF).

En principe, l’une des allocations est réservée à un étudiant(e) de master II, un(e) doctorant(e) ou un(e) post-doctorant(e), de nationalité française ou francophone, accomplissant des recherches dans le domaine de l’archéologie orientale, et plus particulièrement palestinienne, l’autre un(e) étudiant(e) de master II, un(e) doctorant(e) ou un(e) post-doctorant(e), de nationalité française ou francophone, consacrant ses travaux à l’étude des textes bibliques et à la philologie orientale.

Les bénéficiaires de ces des séjours sont tenus de loger sur le campus de l’EBAF et de participer à certains enseignements choisis selon leur thème de recherche. Ils devront rédiger durant leur séjour un mémoire qu’ils déposeront auprès du Secrétariat de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres au plus tard au mois de juillet 2021. Ils peuvent prétendre au titre d’Élève titulaire de l’École biblique s’ils déposent également ce mémoire auprès du Secrétariat de l’École biblique, s’il est accepté par le Conseil académique et s’ils ont assisté régulièrement à au moins deux cours par semestre.

Le montant de l’allocation couvre les frais de pension à l’École biblique pour deux semestres académiques, avec accès libre à la bibliothèque, ainsi que ceux d’inscription aux cours. Les frais de voyage pour se rendre à Jérusalem et de retour en fin de séjour ne sont pas pris en charge.

Les dossiers de candidatures devront être déposés, en 12 exemplaires papier, avant la date limite du vendredi 15 mai 2020, au Secrétariat de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres – 23 Quai de Conti – 75006 Paris (tél. 01 44 41 43 10) ou adressés par email à secretariat2@aibl.fr.

Ils doivent rassembler les éléments suivants :
– une lettre de candidature ;
– un curriculum vitae détaillé ;
– une notice de présentation des travaux réalisés et des projets de recherche ; – deux ou trois appréciations de professeurs.

In this session, our experts discuss the Courtauld’s ever-changing approach to the online publication of its extensive photographic collection (via the development of an ambitious digitisation project encompassing 3.3 million prints and negatives), the implementation of scientific techniques of conservation and the challenges/opportunities this pandemic may provide those working in the field.

In light of the changing landscape of art history, we will be joined by Aviva Burnstock (Professor and Head of the Department of Conservation and Technology at the Courtauld Institute of Art), Theo Gordon (Sackler Postdoctoral Fellow 2019-20 at the Courtauld Institute of Art), Tom Bilson (Head of Digital Media at the Courtauld Institute of Art) and artist and poet Muneera Pilgrim.

The series will touch on pertinent issues — exploring how artists and galleries are adapting to the digital world, showcasing art historical research in light of this global pandemic and providing a platform for creative practice lockdown. Colloque – „Mit Bibel und Spaten“. Wissenschaftliche Tagung zur Vorbereitung der Ausstellung „900 Jahre Prämonstratenser-Orden“ im Kulturhistorischen Museum Magdeburg

Im Jahr 2021 kann der Orden der Prämonstratenser auf sein bereits über 900 Jahre währendes Bestehen zurückblicken. Norbert von Xanten gründete mit einigen Gleichgesinnten ein Kloster in Prémontré in Frankreich, aus dem zu Weihnachten 1121 der heute weltweit blühende Prämonstratenser-Orden hervorging. Dieses Jubiläum nimmt das Kulturhistorische Museum Magdeburg zum Anlass, vom 10. September 2021 bis zum 9. Januar 2022 die erste Alleinausstellung über die Prämonstratenser durchzuführen. Sie gehört zu den drei offiziellen Partnerausstellungen zum Jubiläum, welche außerdem in der Park-Abtei Löwen in Belgien (Mai bis Juli 2021) und im tschechischen Kloster Strahov in Prag (März bis Mai 2022) zu sehen sein werden. Die Ausstellung wird von dem Korrespondenzort-Projekt „Das Erbe der Prämonstratenser“ begleitet, welches in Sachsen-Anhalt und drei angrenzenden Bundesländern angesiedelt ist. Um die Ausstellung und das Korrespondenzort-Projekt wissenschaftlich einzubetten, bestehende Erkenntnisse zu sichern und neue Forschungen zu diskutieren, führt das Kulturhistorische Museum Magdeburg gemeinsam mit dem Zentrum für Mittelalterausstellungen und der Forschungsstelle „Klöster im Hochmittelalter“ der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften eine wissenschaftliche Tagung durch.

Webinaire – Héraldique dans les manuscrits juridiques européens itinérants

Le webinaire « Héraldique dans les manuscrits juridiques européens itinérants » fait partie du projet de recherche « ManJusEurIt – Manuscrits juridiques européens itinérants », mené par Maria Alessandra Bilotta et est également lié aux activités liées à l’équipe de recherche IUS ILLUMINATUM (https: // iusilluminata.fcsh.unl.pt), coordonnée scientifiquement par le même chercheur.

Le webinaire est organisé par l’Institut d’études médiévales (Instituto de Estudos Medievais – IEM-FCSH / NOVA), en collaboration avec l’équipe de recherche IUS ILLUMINATUM et en partenariat avec l’Institut portugais de l’héraldique (IPH). Cette initiative, coordonnée par les chercheurs Maria Alessandra Bilotta et Miguel Metelo de Seixas, vise à montrer l’utilité de l’analyse scientifique de la présence d’emblèmes héraldiques dans le cadre de l’étude des manuscrits enluminés et des documents juridiques, en se concentrant sur les manuscrits et les documents qui ont circulé en Europe au Moyen Âge (XIIIe-XVIe siècles).

Cette initiative vise également à faciliter les synergies entre les différents domaines de connaissances et à diffuser les résultats de la recherche parmi un public plus large, en maintenant toujours la rigueur scientifique, afin de sensibiliser la société contemporaine sur l’importance du patrimoine héraldique dans les manuscrits et dans les documents juridiques médiévaux, en attirant l’attention sur l’importance de la conservation de ce patrimoine.

Le service Imprimés anciens et précieux relève de la Direction opérationnelle Développement et gestion des collections patrimoniales, qui comprend les collections suivantes : Manuscrits, Imprimés anciens et précieux (Imprimés précieux et Histoire du livre), Imprimés contemporains (après 1800), Journaux (Médias contemporains), Dessins, Estampes & Chalcographie, Cartes & plans, Musique, Monnaies & médailles.
