Nordic Elites in Transformation, c. 1050-1250, Volume II explores the structures and workings of social networks within the elites of medieval Scandinavia to reveal the intricate relationship between power and status.

Section one of this volume categorizes basic types of personal bonds, both vertical and horizontal, while section two charts patterns of local, regional and transnational elite networks from wide-scope, longitudinal perspectives. Finally, the third section turns to case-studies of networks in action, analyzing strategies and transactions implied by uses of social resources in specific micro-political settings. A concluding chapter discusses how social power in the North compared to wider European experiences. A wide range of sources and methodologies is applied to reveal how networks were established, maintained, and put to use – and how they transformed in processes of centralizing power and formalizing hierarchies.

The engagement with and analysis of intriguing primary source material has produced a key teaching tool for instructors and essential reading for students interested in the workings of medieval Scandinavia, elite class structures, and Social and Political History more generally.

L’Anonyme de Valois consiste en la réunion de deux séries d’extraits d’œuvres historiques. La première série contient une biographie de Constantin (Origo Constantini imperatoris). La seconde (Anonyme de Valois II), objet de la présente édition, traite de l’histoire de l’Italie durant la période 474-526. Pour plus de clarté, les éditeurs ont ajouté un sous-titre : L’Italie sous Odoacre et Théodoric.

Après le récit de la fin de l’Empire d’Occident, du règne d’Odoacre et de la guerre ayant opposé ce dernier à Théodoric, l’Anonyme de Valois II consacre l’essentiel de ses développements au règne du roi goth. À une longue période de paix et de prospérité (493-523) il oppose les trois dernières années tragiques du règne (523-526). Parmi les sources disponibles sur cette période de l’histoire de l’Italie, l’Anonyme est la plus complète. Il contient par exemple les informations les plus précises sur la déposition de Romulus Augustule, la visite de Théodoric à Rome en 500, le procès et la mort de Boèce. Le texte est entrecoupé par le récit d’événements survenus dans l’Empire d’Orient. Il est composé à partir de sources latines, mais aussi grecques, du 6e siècle, qui sont en grande partie perdues. Il est écrit dans une langue éloignée du latin classique, et est souvent d’interprétation difficile.

Dans l’introduction, la question des sources est très largement traitée. Les éditeurs estiment que l’Anonyme est une collection d’extraits d’une œuvre unique utilisant des sources diverses (Consularia Italica, Cassiodore, auteurs grecs). Ils pensent, arguments à l’appui, qu’il pourrait s’agir des Chroniques perdues de l’archevêque de Ravenne Maximien (546/7-556), un proche de Justinien. Le commentaire est suivi par cinq annexes. L’une d’entre elles contient un texte inédit de Giovanni de Matociis (début du 14e siècle) sur le procès et la mort de Boèce.

Michel Festy est docteur ès lettres. Ses travaux portent sur l’historiographie de la période impériale et l’Antiquité tardive. Il a publié dans la C.U.F. une édition du Pseudo-Aurélius Victor, Abrégé des Césars (1999) et de l’Anonyme de Valois II, L’Italie sous Odoacre et Théodoric (2020).

Massimiliano Vitiello est professeur d’histoire ancienne et tardo-antique à l’Université du Missouri, Kansas City. Il a été boursier de la Fondation Alexander-von-Humboldt près l’Université de Münster, et est titulaire d’un diplôme post-doctoral en études médiévales au Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies de Toronto. Il est auteur notamment de deux biographies de souverains goths : Théodat (University of Toronto Press) et Amalasonthe (University of Pennsylvania Press).

Origines, carrières, lieux… qu’ils soient chevaliers, chapelains, sergents, c’est tout un peuple qui surgit à travers les 2 336 templiers recensés, actifs pour le plus ancien depuis 1248, et 1 135 physiquement présents dans l’une ou l’autre des procédures.

À la fois catalogue et base documentaire, cet ouvrage renseigne une période importante de l’histoire de l’ordre qui envoie alors massivement des recrues à Chypre dans la perspective de reprendre pied en Terre sainte.

In 1986, to mark the 900th anniversary of the murder of King Cnut IV in the Church of Saint Alban in Odense, the Book of Cnut (Knuds-bogen) was published. The volume brought together specialists from several disciplines and shed light on different aspects on the life and cult of Cnut as king and saint. Since then, archaeological excavations in Odense, as well as recent national and international research on the cult of Saint Cnut, have provided scholars with new information about the life and times of Cnut. Furthermore, recent scholarship within medieval studies has resulted in a range of studies which allow for innovative comparisons with the Cnut material.

With the interdisciplinary seminar behind the present publication – arranged in cooperation between the research centre CENTRUM at Odense City Museums, Centre for Medieval Studies at University of Southern Denmark and the senior researcher Anne Hedeager Krag – we brought together both national and international experts. The aim was to bring forth new aspects of Cnut’s life and afterlife and to put these in a wider, international context. By doing so we aimed to lay the basis for future research about Cnut, and to form the basis for further dissemination of the latest discoveries pertaining to Cnut and his time. To be able to fully use the seminar as a groundwork for future research a printed version of the lectures is essential. In this perspective we are pleased that almost all speakers have had the opportunity to publish their lectures.

It is the hope of the editors that the present publication will have relevance for future research in the life and being of Cnut the Holy and other saint kings as well as their effect on the societies in which they functioned, both in life and in afterlife and thereby be a pertinent supplement to the research presented in the Book of Cnut more than 30 years ago.

Cities of Strangers illuminates life in European towns and cities as it was for the settled, and for the ‘strangers’ or newcomers who joined them between 1000 and 1500. Some city-states enjoyed considerable autonomy which allowed them to legislate on how newcomers might settle and become citizens in support of a common good. Such communities invited bankers, merchants, physicians, notaries and judges to settle and help produce good urban living. Dynastic rulers also shaped immigration, often inviting groups from afar to settle and help their cities flourish. All cities accommodated a great deal of difference – of language, religion, occupation – in shared spaces, regulated by law. But when, from around 1350, plague began regularly to occur within European cities, this benign cycle began to break down. High mortality rates led eventually to demographic crises and, as a result, less tolerant and more authoritarian attitudes emerged, resulting in violent expulsions of even long-settled groups. Tracing the development of urban institutions and using a wide range of sources from across Europe, Miri Rubin recreates a complex picture of urban life for settled and migrant communities over the course of five centuries and offers an innovative vantage point on Europe’s past with insights for its present.

Miri Rubin is Professor of Medieval and Early Modern History at Queen Mary, University of London, where she specialises in European history between the eleventh and sixteenth-centuries. She is the author of, most recently, Mother of God: A History of the Virgin Mary (2009), The Hollow Crown: A History of Britain in the Late Middle Ages (2005) and The Middle Ages: A Very Short Introduction (2014). She has made numerous media appearances including the radio programmes In Our Time and Making History for BBC Radio 4.
