Binnen KU Leuven Bibliotheken beheert Bijzondere Collecties een belangrijk deel van de bibliothecaire erfgoedcollecties (manuscripten, oude drukken, grafiek en andere kostbare werken). Daarnaast beheert Bijzondere Collecties een referentiecollectie met circa 75.000 titels over boekgeschiedenis en grafiek. Website van de eenheid

Functie

Bijzondere Collecties is uniek in Europa als expertisecentrum voor de geschiedenis van het handschrift, het gedrukte boek en grafiek. Als collectie-expertboekgeschiedenis ben je, in overleg met de conservatoren, verantwoordelijk voor de referentiecollectie. Je staat in voor de uitbouw en het beheer van deze collectie, de communicatie erover en een belangrijk deel van de dienstverlening in de leeszalen.

1. Collectie

  • Je staat in voor de opbouw, aanvulling en uitbreiding van de referentiecollectie door het bijhouden van uitgeverscatalogi, recensies en bibliografische opzoekingen. Je doet dit in overleg met de conservatoren en de collega’s van andere bibliotheken.
  • Je beheert het collectiebudget dat is toegewezen voor de uitbouw van de collectie.
  • Je zorgt voor een kwalitatieve ontsluiting van de collectie (toekennen van een relevant plaatskenmerk en onderwerpsontsluiting in UDC).

2. Communicatie

  • Je verzorgt de communicatie over de collecties in nieuwsbrieven en op de website. Je bent altijd op zoek naar mogelijkheden om de collectie een bredere zichtbaarheid te geven.

3. Dienstverlening

  • Je bent verschillende dagdelen per week verantwoordelijk voor de permanentie in Bijzondere Collecties en de eerstelijnszorg die hieraan verbonden is (assistentie aan lezers, terugplaatsen van boeken en zorgen voor de orde en netheid in de leeszalen).
  • Je biedt onderzoeks- en onderwijsondersteuning gekoppeld aan de collecties, bijvoorbeeld door het geven van informatiesessies en rondleidingen.
  • Je bent het aanspreekpunt voor inhoudelijke vragen over de collectie boekgeschiedenis.

Voor al deze taken als collectie-expert boekgeschiedenis rapporteer je aan het hoofd van Bijzondere Collecties.

Profiel

  • Je hebt een masterdiploma of bent gelijkwaardig door ervaring. Een boekhistorische specialisatie en een basiskennis van Latijn zijn pluspunten. Werkervaring in een wetenschappelijke bibliotheek en/of een bijkomende bibliotheekopleiding strekken tot aanbeveling.
  • Je hebt kennis van het bibliotheeksysteem Alma en het indelings- en classificatieschema UDC, of je bent enthousiast om je daarin te bekwamen.
  • Je bent vertrouwd met informatica en softwarepakketten als Microsoft Office. Je kan goed uit de voeten met diverse software rond design en communicatie (zoals Adobe Indesign en Intuiface) of je bent enthousiast om je daarin te bekwamen.
  • Je beschikt over uitstekende mondelinge en schriftelijke communicatievaardigheden in het Nederlands en het Engels en een goede kennis van het Frans.
  • Je bent een teamspeler die overlegt en goed samenwerkt met collega’s.
  • Je bent klantgericht, nauwgezet, ondernemend en vernieuwingsgericht. Je hebt zin voor orde, organisatie, innovatie en kwaliteit.
  • Je bent bereid om je permanent bij te scholen.

Aanbod

Wij bieden een voltijdse tewerkstelling van onbepaalde duur. Publication – Alberto Campagnolo, « Book Conservation and Digitization: The Challenges of Dialogue and Collaboration »

The successful transmediation of books and documents through digitization requires the synergetic partnership of many professional figures, that have what may sometimes appear as contrasting goals at heart. On one side, there are those who look after the physical objects and strive to preserve them for future generations, and on the other those involved in the digitization of the objects, the information that they contain, and the management of the digital data. These complementary activities are generally considered as separate and when the current literature addresses both fields, it does so strictly within technical reports and guidelines, concentrating on procedures and optimal workflow, standards, and technical metadata. In particular, more often than not, conservation is presented as ancillary to digitization, with the role of the conservator restricted to the preparation of items for scanning, with no input into the digital product, leading to misunderstanding and clashes of interests. Surveying a variety of projects and approaches to the challenging conservation-digitization balance and fostering a dialogue amongst practitioners, this book aims at demonstrating that a dialogue between apparently contrasting fields not only is possible, but it is in fact desirable and fruitful. Only through the synergetic collaboration of all people involved in the digitization process, conservators included, can cultural digital objects that represent more fully the original objects and their materiality be generated, encouraging and enabling new research and widening the horizons of scholarship.

Publication – Nikolaos Vryzidis, « The Hidden Life of Textiles in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean. Contexts and Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Islamic, Latinate and Eastern Christian Worlds »

The book contains published papers of the conference ‘Textiles & Identity in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean: Paradigms of Contexts and Cross-Cultural Exchanges’ of the British School at Athens held at the (Benaki) Museum of Islamic Art in 2016, as well as some new contributions.

The focus in this wide-ranging collection of studies by key scholars in the field is on textiles and their functions in various Mediterranean contexts (and beyond) during medieval and post-medieval times (ca. 10th-19th c.). The scope of the contributions encompasses archaeological, anthropological and art historical perspectives on a great variety of subjects, such as textiles from the Byzantine Empire and the Medieval Islamic World (e.g. Spain, Mamluk Egypt, Seljuk Anatolia), as well as the production and use of textiles in Italy, the Ottoman Empire, Armenia and Ethiopia. The volume offers a state-of-the-art of an often still hardly known area of study of textiles as historical and cultural sources of information, which makes it essential reading for scholars and a larger audience alike.

The book includes contributions by Laura Rodríguez Peinado, Ana Cabrera-Lafuente, Avinoam Shalem, Scott Redford, Maria Sardi, Vera-Simone Schulz, Nikolaos Vryzidis, Marielle Martiniani-Reber, Elena Papastavrou, Jacopo Gnisci and Dickran Kouymjian.

Nikolaos Vryzidis received his PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a thesis on Greek clerical costume of the Ottoman period. He has already published on the subject in journals like Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Convivium, Iran, JOTSA and Orientalia Christiana Periodica. His research interests are centred on material culture of religion, cross-cultural encounters in the Medieval Mediterranean, and Byzantine-Islamic interchange.

Publication – Eric J. Goldberg, « In the Manner of the Franks Hunting, Kingship, and Masculinity in Early Medieval Europe »

Eric J. Goldberg traces the long history of early medieval hunting from the late Roman Empire to the death of the last Carolingian king, Louis V, in a hunting accident in 987. He focuses chiefly on elite men and the changing role that hunting played in articulating kingship, status, and manhood in the post-Roman world. While hunting was central to elite lifestyles throughout these centuries, the Carolingians significantly altered this aristocratic activity in the later eighth and ninth centuries by making it a key symbol of Frankish kingship and political identity. This new connection emerged under Charlemagne, reached its high point under his son and heir Louis the Pious, and continued under Louis’s immediate successors. Indeed, the emphasis on hunting as a badge of royal power and Frankishness would prove to be among the Carolingians’ most significant and lasting legacies.

Goldberg draws on written sources such as chronicles, law codes, charters, hagiography, and poetry as well as artistic and archaeological evidence to explore the changing nature of early medieval hunting and its connections to politics and society. Featuring more than sixty illustrations of hunting imagery found in mosaics, stone sculpture, metalwork, and illuminated manuscripts, In the Manner of the Franks portrays a vibrant and dynamic culture that encompassed red deer and wild boar hunting, falconry, ritualized behavior, female spectatorship, and complex forms of specialized knowledge that united kings and nobles in a shared political culture, thus locating the origins of courtly hunting in the early Middle Ages.

Appel à contribution – The Total Library: Aspirations for Complete Knowledge in the Middle Ages and Renaissance

The 27th Biennial Conference of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program of Barnard College (New York City) is seeking paper proposals for their online conference to be held December 5, 2020.

According to Borges, “The fancy or the imagination or the utopia of the Total Library has certain characteristics that are easily confused with virtues.” This one-day conference will explore the aspiration for complete knowledge in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, an aspiration expressed in atlases, herbals, encyclopedias that were meant to mirror and maybe tame the diversity of the earth by including in their pages everything. Whether virtuous or problematic, the fantasy of the complete mastery of knowledge created utopias of learning. In our current moment when the value of knowledge is under question, we invite scholars of multiple disciplines (art history, history, literary studies, religion, history of science) to raise questions about the technologies, social structures, and modes of thought that shape what knowledge means at a given moment.

Plenary speakers will include Ann Blair of Harvard University and Elias Muhanna of Brown University.

Publication – Matthieu Pignot, « The Catechumenate in Late Antique Africa (4th -6th centuries). Augustine of Hippo, his Contemporaries and Early Reception »

In The Catechumenate in Late Antique Africa (4th-6th centuries) Matthieu Pignot explores how individuals became Christian in ancient North Africa. Before baptism, converts first became catechumens and spent a significant time of gradual integration into the community through rituals and teaching. This book provides the first historical study of this process in African sources, from Augustine of Hippo, to canon of councils, anonymous sermons and 6th-century letters. Pignot shows that practices varied more than is generally assumed and that catechumens, because of their liminal position, were a disputed and essential group in the development of Christian communities until the 6th century at least. This book demonstrates that the catechumenate is key to understanding the processes of Christianisation and conversion in the West.

Matthieu Pignot, D.Phil (2016), University of Oxford, is postdoctoral researcher at the FNRS/Université de Namur. He has published edited books and articles on the history and reception of early Christianity in the West, with a particular focus on North Africa.

Le architetture di una città medievale costituivano un immobile palcoscenico dei rituali urbani, di qualsiasi tipo essi fossero, o ne diventavano invece parte integrante? Un’immagine della Madonna col Bambino portata in processione lungo le vie e le piazze di una città era intercambiabile con un’altra dallo stesso soggetto, o il rituale si sostanziava proprio della sua unicità iconografica e materica? Quei rituali riuscivano a esercitare una carica trasformatrice sulla topografia della città e sull’allestimento della sua ecclesia maior, o piuttosto erano i cambiamenti intervenuti sull’assetto viario e sugli edifici monumentali a modificare i rituali?

Pur partendo dalla premessa che siamo ancora lontani dal poter interpretare pienamente il valore della testualità medievale in relazione a tali questioni, bisogna ormai convenire che nel Medioevo non esisteva rituale facente capo a una cattedrale nel quale non si prevedesse l’entrata in gioco di una o più opere d’arte, di una o più architetture. Questo volume propone una serie di letture che possano consentire di comprendere meglio, in un ampio spettro geografico e cronologico, il nesso città-cattedrali-rituali, da un punto di vista storico e storico-artistico.

FED-tWIN is a federal research program of the Programmatory Federal Public Service for Science Policy (BELSPO) with the aim of stimulating sustainable cooperation between ten federal scientific institutions and Belgian universities by funding joint research profiles. This vacancy is part of the research profile MuSEE.doc – Materia collecta, viva memoria. From heritage inventory to cultural appropriation: museographic and scientific exploitation and enhancement of the Gallo-Roman collections of the RMAH and of the FSIs analytical and documentary resources. You will implement the FED-tWIN MuSEE.doc research profile in the UCLouvain (50%) and RMAH (50%). MuSEE.doc firstly aims the valorisation of the Gallo-Roman archaeological artefacts and related archives of the RMHA, both originating from past excavations, mainly but non exclusively led by the Belgian’s first State Service for Excavation. Based on the results of the National Archaeology Collections Inventory Project, also funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, you will improve the short and long terms protocols and conditions of conservation and study the collections, by giving them a new scientific identity, by its assessment, by studying and rendering it available for study. You will more specifically develop studies of three types of finds and materials, as important as each other for research purposes (ceramics, lapidary, copper alloys ware) and will participate at the study and publication of the gallo-roman collections and sites managed by the CRAN. You will also enhance its reference collection for roman ceramics. Following those joint aims, you will link the experience of both the Museum and the University in matters of research (joint expertises), museography (museum’s resources), higher education (university’s resources) and dissemination (joint actions : meetings and publications). Eligibility criteria

Vous êtes en possession d’un diplôme de docteur en Histoire de l’Art et Archéologie avec une expertise reconnue en archéologie gallo-romaine, spécialement dans les provinces septentrionales de l’Empire (Belgica, Germania), de la période de la conquête jusqu’à et y compris l’antiquité tardive.

Votre doctorat a été obtenu au maximum 12 ans avant la date de dépôt de la candidature. Cette période de 12 ans peut être prolongée d’un an pour toute absence due à un congé de maternité de trois mois au minimum ou par période ininterrompue de trois mois au minimum de congé parental à temps plein ou congé d’adoption à temps plein, pris par le candidat entre l’obtention du titre de doctorat et la date ultime d’introduction des dossiers de candidature, sans que pour autant la prolongation totale n’excède un an par enfant. Une prolongation est également possible pour la durée réelle des périodes attestées de maladie de longue durée du candidat ou d’un membre de famille proche auquel ce dernier a donné des soins médicaux, pour autant qu’il s’agisse de périodes ininterrompues de trois mois au minimum.

Vous avez réalisé des recherches de haut niveau et des communications y afférant(conférences, séminaires, colloques, publications).

Vous possédez une connaissance approfondie dans au moins un des trois domaines suivants dans la région et la période concernées : céramologie (vaisselle de cuisine, de table, de prestige, terre-cuites architecturales, …) ; matériel lapidaire (sculpture, pierres architecturales et ornementales) ; matériel métallique (vaisselle, petite statuaire, instrumentum domesticum, arts mineurs, bijoux, etc).

Vous connaissez le cadre historique général, et maîtrisez le contexte socio-économique et environnemental des territoires concernés, et ce plus particulièrement dans le domaine de l’architecture et des infrastructures, qu’elles soient civiles, religieuses ou funéraires, rurales (campagne) ou urbaines (agglomérations et villes).

Vous êtes capable de vous exprimer en Français. La connaissance au moins passive de l’Anglais et du Néerlandais sont demandés. La connaissance passive de l’Allemand est un plus. Si vous recevez des tâches d’enseignement, vous devrez maîtriser la langue du cours au niveau CEFR C1.

Votre contribution à l’UCLouvain

Votre action s’inscrira dans le cadre des trois missions assignées à l’université : la recherche, l’enseignement, les services à la société. Vous conduirez des recherches dans le domaine de l’archéologie gallo-romaine, en particulier de l’étude des mobiliers de la période. Vous participerez notamment à l’exploitation et au développement de la collection de référence des céramiques romaines du Centre de recherches d’archéologie nationale et développerez des projets de diffusion et de consultation des données qui lui sont attachées. Vous aurez une démarche prospective de financement et de développement de projets. À cette fin, vous entretiendrez la synergie entre les Musées royaux d’art et d’histoire et l’UCLouvain et vous inscrirez votre action dans le cadre des réseaux de recherche en la matière aux niveaux régionaux et international. Vous pourrez contribuer à la formation des étudiants en participant notamment à l’encadrement de séminaires, de travaux et de mémoires de fin d’études en archéologie du Nord-Ouest européen et en archéologie gallo-romaine en particulier (bachelor et master), y compris d’éventuels doctorats, en concertation avec les co-titulaires et équipes d’enseignants en archéologie nationale.

Votre contribution aux Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire

Vous établissez un inventaire critique des archives et documents liés aux pièces gallo-romaines du musée afin de mieux les contextualiser. Vous complétez l’inventaire digital de la collection en vérifiant l’état de conservation et les conditions de stockage / présentation des objets, en vous appuyant tant sur les services ad-hoc du musée que sur l’expertises d’autres Institutions scientifiques fédérales. Vous améliorez leurs conditions de préservation en collaboration avec le service de restauration des MRAH et d’éventuels experts externes. En combinant des approches archivistiques, technologiques (éventuelles analyses physico-chimiques) et typologiques, vous réétudiez des corpus de matériel (céramique, lapidaire, métallique), en vous intégrant dans les projets de recherches en cours aux niveau national et international. Ces études pourront déboucher sur des publications, des expositions temporaires ou l’adaptation de la présentation permanente.

You own the degree of Doctor of Art History and Archaeology with proven expertise in Gallo-Roman archaeology, especially in the northern provinces of the Empire (Belgica, Germania), from the period of conquest to late antiquity.

The PhD was obtained a maximum of 12 years prior to the stipulated deadline of application. This period of 12 years is extended by one year for any absence due to pregnancy, parental or adoption leave, as well as any prolonged absence due to illness of the candidate or and prolonged absence due to illness of a first-degree family member.

Specific Requirements

You report on your experience or skills in the management and enhancement of global or specialized archaeological collections (exhibition rooms, laboratories, reserves or repositories), and in the field of their inventory, selection and cataloguing.

You present an experience or ability to (co-)organise general or thematic scientific meetings (research seminar, study day, roundtable, colloquium, congress) and to manage the publication of own or third party scientific works (author, reviewing, scientific edition).

You state your activities for disseminating knowledge to both expert and non-specialist audiences through conferences, catalogues, guides, tour guides, etc. and any experience you may have in museology or museography.

You should be able to express yourself in French. In any case, you will justify your ability to acquire fluent French. Passive knowledge of Dutch or English required. Passive knowledge of German is an asset.

You’re able to cooperate with the teams members of both the Research Institute at UCLouvain and the Royal Museum of Arts and History, and to work independantly.

If you take up a teaching assignment as (co)lecturer, you master the teaching language of the course at CEFR level C1.
